Here's the deal. What is to be gained by replacing the rear pads that have plenty of meat (30%) on a car a modern car with ABS that sees relatively infrequent but moderately aggressive use?

Its an XJR and statistically it brakes from 60mph to 0mph in 126-128ft. The fronts were just swapped out, will there be anything gained by swapping out the rears as well? The analogy given to me was its like using two different types of tires on the front and rear and I had to disagree, since that is not a factor in this example. The car has relatively new Michelin Pilot Sports with less than 10k on them and 2/3rds of its tread remaining.

Would you replace the rears? Why? Wouldn't this be common practice if it made a difference? Obviously the rears would need a break in period before they provided the most braking power. I'm trying to understand what could be gained beyond peace of mind which in itself is a good motivator ala timing belt changes! :D

    Thoughts?

If the pads have significantly different properties I recomend changing both. If the coefficients of friction are different at different temps you will never have proper brake balance.

For a track driven car I often suggest both depending on the driver. One reason is the above and also the thicker pads provide a greater thermal barrier to the fluid if that is anticipated to be a potential problem.

The rear set are Ferodo on Brembo rotors, the fronts are Akebono Ceramics on Brembo Rotors. It will be used several times a week for heavy just above the ABS threshold braking beyond normal putting about. The brakes are pretty good and tempt drivers for late braking which is something he does more than I. I guess its best just to change them out then. FWIW, the car does 10-11k miles/yr and starting to drop now that the Mustang GT seems more use.
