How do you measure or determine what the lift and duration are on a cam.

I am trying to determine if a cam in my race car is indeed stock or aftermarket.

What tools or machine would be needed to determine this with 100% accuracy.

    Regards,

You fix a degree wheel to one end of the crankshaft, and a dial indicator to a valve lifter. Then simply turn the engine and note the period the valve is open for, and how far it opens.

    Jon,
You ought to check out this site:

Scroll to the bottom, and there are links to pages that explain terminology, how to dial in cams etc. Very well done, and good of them to have taken the time to put the material up for all. Cam events can dramatically effect how a Ferrari motor performs, and there is more than a bit of misunderstanding on the hows and whys.
BTW: They do by the way excellent work, and I use their cams. Service has been excellent, on time!

You need the cam specs to determine lift and ramps at checking lash versus operating lash [clearances].
