I am a 348 owner, but I am considering also getting a Boxster from summer driving that I can drive every day and hopefully sell at a small profit at summer's end.

What are the cars like? The good? The bad? Anything to watch out for in particular? Service issues? I would be looking at a 97 or 98, as these would be more affordable for the populace once I am through with it.

    thanks!!

Great cars, but get an S. Plus, you may want to think about getting a tip. Not many folks know how to use a stick anymore.

Only do this if you're going to get an "S". Actually, I know of a great one for sale right now. It's really great.

I owned a 99 (base) Boxster and currently own an 01 S. Both cars are a lot of fun, but you would probably be pretty disapointed with the power of the base Boxster. The S is definitely the way to go. As far as service issues, there are a lot of cars that have a rear main seal leak. Make sure to look for this - especially if the car is out of warranty. I believe all 2000 and later cars came with a 4 year/50k miles warranty. The 97-99 cars were only 3/36. So, you should be able to find an early S (00 or 01) that still has some warranty left. The regular service costs aren't too bad. $120 - $160 or so for an oil change every 15k miles. I do it every 6-7.5k miles which still isn't too bad.

I think the cars ride and handle well. I don't really have any complaints, and keep in mind, my Boxster is my daily driver. Another good point about the car, if you use it every day, is the two trunks. There is a surprising amount of storage space considering the size of the car.

i would pay extra ands get a c2 cab or less and get a used s2000 honda..the boxters are nice cars , they just dont excite me and i dont like the rear end..they have a few more service and relialbliy issues than the c2s..but with that said, you can get great deals on used ones, cant go wrong for the money,...they just dont excite me.. i would get the s...much better performer

    Get an S...!!!

Boxsters (and Porsche in general) are so underrated... Have you ever driven one...? If not, go drive one, right away... They're such awesome cars... Quick, great acceleration, ultra tight steering, very well balanced... Very cool stuff... Let us know how it goes... and post pictures if you get one; i love those things... :)

I don't see how you can expect to sell it at a small profit at the end of the summer.

I've done it with a summer car every year for the last 8 straight years, but Mitch, you might be right this time!!

Stay AWAY from the 97 models. I bought one with 8000 miles on it, drove it maybe 9K miles and it was the MOST unreliable car I'd ever owned.

Multiple rear-main oil leaks (recurring), engine management issues, fuel management issues. Convertible top issues. ugh.

I understand vast improvements were made later in the series 99+. Also, go with an "S" if you have the spare change- the base model is a prettyboy mobile, a souped honda civic will eat you alive.

Also, selling for a profit- I duno. I sold my 18K mile car for 22k... about $1 mile loss in a year and a half so be careful.
