My friend and I are trying to get over to Europe this year for the German GP, so we'll have to pick out some tickets. We can't spend too much, so we have been looking at general day admission tickets. The most important thing is that we can get to a good place to get photos. Also, would staying in Frankfurt and driving/catching a train to the track in the morning be practical?

    Thanks a lot,

    John

I went there in 02 had a great time. Frankfurt to Hockenheim is about 100Km/63 miles to be safe I would say it would be about an hour drive. You definitely want to rent a car so you can drive on the autobahn that was half the fun there. I stayed in Heidelburg which is pretty close to the Hockenheim track about 20Km/13 miles I highly recommed staying there beautiful town plenty of things to do and see there. As far as the track my seats were ok but weren't great for pictures so I couldn't tell you where the best area would be for that.

How long are you planing on staying in Germany?

I appreciate the advice, but the German GP is at the Nürburgring this year. Also , I would love to just rent a car, but saving money is pretty important.

To answer your question about how long we will be there, we would fly into Milan on the 15 of July, stay in Italy until the 20th, catch a train/drive to Frankfurt, go the race at the Nürburgring, and then fly back on the 23rd.

    Thanks

I have never been to the Ring for a GP, but i was at Hockenheim 2003, if money is tight don't hesitate to camp at the track, it will be very cheap, and the Germans are the masters of camping, they seem to take there whole house with them. Facilities were fantastic, the best of any race i have camped at by a long way, and i would guess it would be the same at the Ring'...

If possible i would recommend that u save in other areas, and get yourself a grandstand ticket, as often the general Ad tickets are very limited at euro races. You must remember that if u are there for the 3 days of the event, u will be stuck in the General Ad section for all sessions, where as if u have a a grandstand ticket u will be able to view from other stands except on race day..

Well I guess I ought to check out the schedule. I didn't realize they done away with Hockenheim. I unfortunately never been to Nürburgring.

Hockenheim hasn't "been done away with" - just alternating between the two tracks.

John - think about flying into Koln in lieu of MXP for the race, unless you have a need to be in Milan. If you are thinking of taking a train - get your tickets (or better yet a rail pass) while still in the US. We just got all our TGV tickets for Le Mans - arrived about 3 days after making reservations - www.raileurope.com - just a thought.

I went to The European Grand Prix at Nurburgring in 2003. I called the track to find out the best way to get there. There is no train that goes directly into the town of Nurburg. However, there is a shuttle bus that runs from the town of Kolbenz. Do find out the times of that shuttle. When I called from the states they neglected to tell me that shuttle only runs in the early part of the morning. I got to Kolbenz about two hours before race time via train, and had to board another train to another town, change trains and ended up in a small town roughly 20 miles from the track. There is a bus that runs from there to the track, however it will be on Sunday time schedule, not many running. Lucky for me there was a few others looking to go to the race and a taxi stopped. We all piled in at a fare of 30 Euros and he took us directly to the track. Call the track ahead of time, and find out the "exact" time of that shuttle. It will save you a lot of hassle. Beautiful scenery in that region by the way.
