I've been putting it off for awhile b/c I did't really NEED a computer, b/c my dell was fine (5 years old). Now it's starting to take up over 20 minutes from turning it on to when i can actually go online. I really want a laptop, I really won't be using it for more than the internet and maybe making some picture albums. I have the money, I have the desire, and I'm just going to go to the store tonight and get it. I keep hearing good things, I like how they operate, and I like change.

I just need a little kick in the pants. Should I go?

Edit: I apologize, can a mod. move this to the technology section?

Let's put it this way. Once you use Apple, you will never go back. PC does everything Apples does and even more, but Apple does just as much with elegance. If you are just using it for regular tasks, it will make your world a lot simpler. (BTW, I have MacBook Pro Notebook)

i probably couldn't make the change to a mac, simply because i've been using pc's all my life. i'm sure i'd get used to it after a while, but consider that the 2 are quite a bit different.

Use a Dell lap top for work and Macs for personal. LOVE MY MACS! They are freaking awesome. My wife has a MacBook Pro 15.3" screen model. She loves it. Does all her surfing wirelessly. If you are just going to have ONE computer make it a 17" MacBook Pro! You will LOVE IT! Nothing easier when it comes to dealing with pictures and making websites, etc. The only problem w/ Macs is the limited time and duration of tech support... I would probably tell you to buy an extended warranty since you don't jump from computer to computer...

    Good luck!

I got a new iMac a couple of months ago. If I had it to do over again, I don't know that I'd opt for the Mac. My wife uses a lot of Office documents and spreadsheets via email. We put Office '07 on our iMac, and it works, but it's a bit of a pain to open documents. You can't just click the attachment like you can with a PC and open the document (or if you can, I don't know how to). You have to download the attachment, then open the program (Excel, Word, etc) and then find the document. PITA!

I just use the computer for basic things and don't have any problems with it. The interface is easy enough to get along with, but I'm not in love with it like many others. The iMac simply does what I need it to, but my PC did as well. The real test will be how long the iMac lasts. If it lasts longer than my PC's have, I'll be satisfied. If it doesn't, I'll never buy another one.

My GF and I got a 24" iMac last year (we live together), and there's nothing better. We use it for everything from basic stuff to watching any missed TV programs. We're just as likely to pull up a couple of chairs to watch shows on it as the TV. Especially old South Park episodes or The Office and other programs on Hulu. I also use it for some voice over work. The interface does take a bit of getting used to. There's no going back once you've got Mac! :)

    Im another Mac fan.

For me the computer is a tool. I want my tools to be user friendly. For some the computer is a hobby...in that sense I can see wanting a PC.

I have four macs. Two in my home, one in my office and a laptop. LOVE THEM.

I also have an Alienware PC for those times I NEED a PC...but its rare I use it.

I like apple products, but just hate their OS and the way everything is laid out on the mac's. PC seems just soo much easier when I'm on a mac.

I bought a Mac Cube a few years ago. It really sucked in reliability & wasn't cheap to fix.

Maybe it was a bad design even though it looked really cool back then.

    YES!

Problems are rare but 24/7 phone support is worth its weight in gold.

FYI: I have it even though I have never used it for this machine.

Dropped the pc's last year for two macs. Will never go back. It's the most elegantly designed and no trouble piece of technology I have ever owned.

You won't regret it. Get the AppleCare and go for an hour a week to get settled into it.

You will be a multimedia genius in no time.

Ok, I bit the bullet! I got the 2 gb macbook with 2.4 ghz. I went into the store, told him what I wanted (wanted to do it quickly so I didn't change my mind). I think I was in and out of the store in under a half hour. I received a $100 discount b/c i'm a 'recent college grad'. That's what I told him atleast, I actually graduated 1.5 years ago but I carry my id around, to save me that all important $1 at the movies. Anyway, they are offering a pretty cool program right now, an education special. Pay for an 8gb itouch and a printer, and you'll receive a rebate check for $399. So, if anyone is interested in a brand new itouch that won't be used by myself, or the printer; let me know. I'll give all fchatters first dibs. I also received a discount on the applecare plan b/c I purchased the education pack. It's normally $250, I paid $190. I figure after I receive the rebate and sell the printer and itouch, i will have made out pretty well.

I'm enjoying it so far, but I need to get used to it's operating system. Does anyone know of a good website with tutorials, or is apple.com the best one? I've been wanting a laptop too, so I can go anywhere in the house now.

Thanks for the kick in the pants, everyone!

Good to hear Brandon. The rebates come pretty quickly. Usually within 5-7 days if you register it online.

I read that on macworld.com before. But they said it was only a rumor and may not happen for awhile. It's not really a big deal, I can deal with the semi-newest. :) Plus I hate waiting.

I transferred a bunch of my pictures from my PC to my mac last night, but a lot of them did not go through. My friend told me I'll have to convert them, does anyone know what I need to convert them to or how to do it?

Convert pictures? That doesn't make sense. If you want to import them into iPhoto, you can do that. But a picture is a picture and is rendered dependent upon the application opening it. jpgs, gifs and pngs will look just fine. (actually better than a pc)

Yeah, into a different format maybe? I'll be angry if i can't move them all into the mac.

Edit: i'm thinking also that since my sister has been using my flash drive, she most likely wasn't closing it before physically removing it from her computer, thus screwing it up. I remember that happened to me back in college, a ton of my files were corrupted b/c I didn't know any better. I was using it to dl the pictures on to it, then put them into the mac. Is this possible? Can I buy a 2 ended USB cord, and connect both the pc and mac directly so i can transfer everything over?

USB to USB for transferring? Doesn't work that way. You can put them on the same network and have them talk to each other.

A flash card will work just fine, or else... email them to yourself using gmail/outlook, etc. That would be the slow and selective way.

Image files are just image files. Doesn't matter what computer they are on.

That won't work. USB is not designed for PC<->PC data exchange. Connect them over your network! (which you surely have if you're using the internet with multiple computers). Setting it up to work with Mac<->PC might be a bit of work, but I'm sure there are loads of tutorials out there.
