The more I look at this model, the more I want one. I think this car has a high degree of elegance. If I bag the idea of buying a 360 Spider, am I getting old? I'd sorely miss my dream drop-top, but the 456 seems pretty sweet!

Can't go wrong with a 4 seater Ferrari.

I was actually looking at them but decided against it.
I thought it might be cool to take my wife and child with me to shows and such,,,,,,changed my mind, they stay home :)

What about 456+355 Spider ? Wouldnt that be in the same range of a 360 Spider ?

Well, there were a couple of Straman conversions, but I think amenasce was suggesting that you buy BOTH a 456GT AND a 355 spider.

If I could fit comfortably in a 355 spider, I'd seriously consider that myself.

    Don't you have a 348? Buy a 456 and keep that.

Watch out for a few splinters like on the Automatic trans versions. 456 seems to have a lot of weight, concentrated on the front end. Though MR. Jordan greatly enjoys his 456 experience. If you can hack the bill then you may find bliss there...

There is no way ya can buy a 355 spider AND a 456 for the same price as a 360 spider. 360 spiders arnt worth that much dude.
In the UK a 355 spider would fetch £45+k and a 360 spider £65+k, would be great to have a 456 for £20k..;) If that was the case i will buy one in the morning.
Here is my 355 spider and the 456 that i drove to Maranello for a week last month. I wish i could own both me self.

I understand that the AT trans in these cars are EXPENSIVE to replace. Mid 5-figures???

I hear the engine is seriously expensive to replace in any Ferrari, has that stopped anyone from buying a car they enjoy? And yes, you can fix an engine (though there's certainly some big-$$$ failure modes that many have seen, like timing belt breakage). No different with the slush-box in the GTA.

Honestly, the myth/hysteria about the AT in the 456 has just gone overboard. The facts are the AT has been reliable enough that very few (just one documented case) have had occasion to repair/replace the AT on this car. It's made by Ricardo with GM guts (we even have the GM model numbers), and when/if the occasion arises, you can bet the DIY community will have a way to repair these units. That's a long way off, as many GTAs are on the road, driven everyday, giving reliable service well into the 40, 60, 80,000+ mileage range.

See my owners/drivers report elsewhere in this section for some straight-talk about 456 GTA. It's a fine transmission, works great, and detracts little from the Ferrari "experience" while offering some pleasant bonuses (everyday driveability, ease in traffic).

    Chaa,

    you have very good taste..

456's are fantastic.. I think design is actually better than any other Ferrari made since, except the F355, and the F599.... (just a personal view/no offense to anyone)

If I had to buy a Ferrari powered by a V8, it would indeed be a F355 spider rather than a 360....

My 456 GT and I now live in West Seattle. Last weekend, I loaded my 4 year old and my 10 year old in it and we went to the Italian Concours. Fun for the whole family. I got admiring glances everywhere we went. There is something so nice about moving through those gears.
Now then, that said, despite a PPI, I learned I needed a MAJOR service one year into ownership, rear shocks and tires, throttle box, brake job on the rear, and as long as I was spending a few bucks anyway, I now have red calipers. FOS hit me pretty good. North of $20K, but it really runs great now, and it looks like a million bucks too. Fortunately, I did not pay top dollar for the car a year ago, so now I have in it what many pay in the first place for a clean, correct 456 GT, with a known history. Just rolled over 27000 on the odo.
    I'm still smilin'.

456 is a sweet car in the old front engine (Daytona) tradition but there are some expensive issues with them. I am told that there were a number of cars that had side windows replaced replaced under warranty. Apparently there were problems with proper fit and function of the window mechanism (when door handle is lifted the window opens slightly before door opens).

A friend is constantly having his Aston Martin Vantage confused with a Mustang. I've seen people confuse a 456 with a Chevy. It would make me nuts if it was mine.

Yeah, if you squint you can see how the Chevy designer used the 456/550 rear as a model - especially the tail lights. But otherwise the cars don't look alike and after a press of the loud pedal only the most confused would have a problem figuring out which was the Ferrari.

It's more crazy-making to have your car confused with a Mustang, IMHO.
