I have to put my 360 up on jackstands to check wheel bearings this weekend. I do not have access to a lift and was hoping one of you has a process for how to get the car up on to jackstands. Can it be done with a single large floor jack and 4 jackstands? If so a description of how (with pictures if you have them to show the jacking points) would be a huge help.

    Thanks!

p.s. I am trying to chase a mechanical rattle (sounds like a "tinkling" noise) that is fairly loud and consistent at a 30mph cruise in a straight line. It goes away when I get on or off the throttle, and if I steer left/right. So I want to rule out wheel bearings first. I realize a diagnosis of a noise like this via the forum is a longshot, but figured I would throw it out there in case there is a known issue.

Before you jack it up, check your exhaust. ;)

I assume you are saying the noise is coming from the rear of the car. Shock bushings make more of a "knock" sound and are common issues. Exhaust as already has been said. If its in the front then check lower ball joints.

Can't help on jacking it up, I have a lift and had the dealer show me the front lift points but that would not help you with a jack since you also have to get the jack stands under it. Here are where the dealer told me to lift it. First pic is the rear lift point, you should find it easily, second pic is the front.

Ok, you have it up on a lift. Now how do you pull the bottom plastic panel off? It appears trapped by the rear jack point.

Best I can guess is to set it up on wheel ramps (with jack or lift), pull the rear lower plastic engine cover, then use the jack points to lift it up.

:) True, they are trapped, poor design but its what the dealer did.

At home, I put it on my 4post lift, took the undertrays off and then on the 2post lift. Quite a pain, the 4post is a storage lift for a non-running, not easily moved car but it worked.

I suppose you have to lift the car, undo all the bolts/screws holding the undertrays in place, lower the car back to the ground, remove the trays and re-lift the car. Glad I won't be doing that very often.

For a lift, its a pain, with a floor jack and jack stands its 4x the pain. I plan on jacking the rear up and setting it on wheel ramps, then putting the front on jack stands since the front jack points seem wide enough. This is a one step process, and seems easier than the panel jack/lift shuffle.

I didn't have a post lift, so the way I did it was using 2 floor jackets and 2 stands. I lifted up the car evenly at both sides and kept the car on the jacks. Then placed the stands under the chassis near the lift points and placed a piece of rag in between. The jacks along with the stands were doing the weight support. Removed all screws and dropped the large plastic panel. Removed jacket stands and lowered the car to remove the panel from underneath the car. Lifted the car back up again using the same method to get access underneath.

Thanks guys. I will check the exhaust, shock bushings and ball joints (in addition to the wheel bearings). Most likely method for me is to find a 2nd floor jack, jack it up simultaneously on both sides with a 12" or so 2X4 between the jack pads and chassis jack points and try and sneak a jackstand in under the stub of the 2X4 that will allow me to release the floor jacks and move to the other end of the car...

Wouldn't it be cool if these cars had those little jacks that came out of the bottom like the 458 challenge cars with the little air port on the rear to jack up the car really quick? :)

I put my 360 onto jack stands using 2 floor jacks. It takes a fairly low profile floor jack to be able to roll under the side of the 360 to get to the jack point. Block the front wheels ( if you are jacking up the rear) use hockey pucks on the jack platform to settle into the recessed depression jack point on the car. You need two people to jack up both sides simutaneously, then I put the jack stands at a solid point on the axle and lowered the floor jacks. I think in my case we couldn't slide the floor jacks under the low profile of the car so we backed the rear wheels onto some 2 x 4's to raise the height of the side skirts so that the floor jack could side underneath. Remember to slight loosen the lug nuts prior to jacking up the car. BTW, my car is currently at my Indy mechanic getting a rear wheel bearing replaced. I have been hearing a scrapping noise with each wheel revolution. It is taking time to get the new bearing. Apparently, Ferrari would not ship a new bearing until my mechanic sent them the serial number of my car.

Thanks DrDoug. Your jacking method sounds like the one to try. BTW - how many miles are on your car? I am hoping that my noise is just something loose (with only 4K miles on the car) but mentally preparing for a much bigger job.

My car does have 26,000 miles on it (2002). My mechanic says that the reason for the bearing failing is due to the aftermarket larger wheels and tires. 19 inch wheels with monster 345/19/25s on the rear. They look great and handle well (the rear tires are 14 inches wide) but they are hard on the suspension and not cheap either at $550 per tire. Good luck with putting the car on jacks. Feel free to PM me if you want any more info on how I did it. I wish I had taken pictures when I did it but I was too focused on getting the car up safely without damage.
