Yesterday I put a deposit down on a new Range Rover Sport, which should arrive in November. I'm planning on buying it instead of leasing, but thought I would create a thread asking if anybody recommends leasing instead of buying based on their experience or knowledge.

    Any advice is appreciated.

It depends on how long you're keeping it. The depreciation on all Range Rover is historically shocking. I once considered trading in my 04 Rover for the new 05 Sport, and the dealer buy-back was a $20K hit for a year-old low-mile well-maintained Rover.

Its gross vehicle weight is heavy enough to qualify sec 179. Talk to your accountant. Lease it and write it off as a partial business expense.

They are beautiful cars, but be prepared to spend $60+ for a fill-up at the gas station.

    Jeff,

Was looking them today and even took one out for a test ride. I like it but the dealer wants sticker for the cars and I feel that it will take a big hit.

Do they want sticker by you too?

    Thanks,

    Chris

There is many around Newport Beach, I drove one but still not convinced on it....

I would maybe if the dealer wasn't wanting so much more just because it's Newport Beach...

I had one for about a month. Drove well, but lots of electrical gremlins. The svc dept at the dealer in Dallas doesn't have enough capacity, and I'm not big on waiting, so I traded it a few weeks ago. Also, several design flaws, particularly the backseats don't fold down unless the front seats are waay far forward, and the trailer hitch design is no good for a bike rack.

Chris, they do indeed want sticker for it.

I know they're guzzlers & my brother has had an '04 Range Rover for a couple of years now, so I'm familiar with them, as I've driven his on numerous occasions.

Dino, thanks a lot there buddy, I'm getting it in that awful orange color. :)
I know it's a love it or hate it color. I happen to really like it. I saw it on the road a few weeks back and liked the way it looked. I've had 6 cars in the last few years, 2 have been yellow and 4 have been silver. I've been wanting something different for a while now. I know it looks great in black, but don't really want black.

Did they give you an idea of what the lease payments would be? How many miles would you drive a year(approx)? How long do you want want keep it?
Leasing might make sense if you do a short term lease.

As far as the orange color you are getting .. I like it too. Its distinctive and different.
Curious did you drive a Cayenne S or Cayenne Turbo? I know they are becoming quite common in our area. Whereas the Rover Sport is not going to be seen as much. Did that factor into your decision?

They compared one agaimst a Jeep on a recent episode of TopGear . The Jeep won by a large margin. They had numerous reliability issues with the Range Rover just in the few days they had it for the test. Be careful...

    Hey Tom,

I doubt that I'll drive it more than 10k miles per year and I'll probably want it for no more than 2 years. So I'm thinking based on those 2 factors, I might be better off leasing it. I'll call the salesman today and get some numbers on a 24 month lease.

I've never been crazy about the Cayenne. I'd take the Range Rover Sport over it anyday.

    Hi Jeff,

Just let me know what the lease payments are and I will be able to give you a better idea what I think you should. Also is your brother thinking of selling his 04 RR within a year or so? If he is I might have a friend who would be interested in buying it. He is looking for a used G500 or RR and his lease will be coming to an end within a year.

I had a '98 HSE that was a nightmare when it came to electrical problems....Been wwanting to look at a Sport for a few weeks but I have'nt made it to the dealership yet. Saw an Orange on the road today and I really like it....Landrover wants MSRP for all their cars, I have seen $2k off max a few times if it was needed to close the deal.

    Hey Tom,

The salesman said it would be about $3500 due at signing and $1350 per month for 24 months. That's with 12k miles per year. If I wanted 15k miles, it would be about $50 more per month. Seems like either way, lease or buy, I'm gonna pay a s*itload to have this truck for a couple of years.

You can't write the car off as a business deduction anymore. A law was passed this summer that cut it off.

But, last August we got a a new Range, Alveston Red/ parchment. The car is striking, and there is nothing "cheap" looking about it-- no black bumper-plastic that seems to plague the sport. THe lower panels under the doors really stand out as cheap looking in lighter colors, and the intakes on the fenders look really cheap too, as well as the grill. But those don't really matter because the car really fills that smaller SUV niche (the LR3 is really, realllly ugly). Our car is really big, it becomes a little tedious on back roads, but it is really uncomrpomised for highway cruising. The sport, I'm sure is great for the like as well. Good luck! You'll enjoy it.

    jeff,
Are you getting the supercharged version? Those payments seem incredibly high. Do the payments you were quoted include sales tax? I figured the lease payments would be around a $1,000 a month. I guess the payments are so high since the residuals are weak. Also does Land Rover honor Ford employee/friends discounts? I thought they did. Maybe that could bring the cost down too. Just a thought.

Yep, supercharged version. That's the out the door monthly price. I haven't done any homework on it yet, but I definately will before making any final decisions. Keep in mind that the quoted price is for a 24 month lease. I agree that the price seems high, but then again, I'm not reallly with it when it comes to leases, SUVs, etc...

    CLOSED END LOW KM LEASE

Anything else is a dangerous folly. You'll be giving it back in 24 months anyways.....either because you hate it.....or because you love it and it's not worth anything close to the buyout.

I was a LR sales manager for two years......trust me.

Not yet. I was told I'll get it in November sometime. He'll know what part of November in mid-late October. I was in Vegas this past weekend & saw an old friend who has the exact Range I'm getting - '06 Sport in orange. I rode in it and loved it. Loved the color as well.

read this thread with great interest. Every car i have, with the exception of my wife's '04 RR HSE and my '06 RR Sport Supercharged (Black, I was offered the orange but found it dull, IMO), is owned outright with clear titles. Both Rovers are 2year, single payment leases due to the incredible depreciation hit these vehicles take. The single payment option was my preference since you get a reasonable money factor and I hate making monthly payments on anything.

As to the performance and reliability of the Rovers, maybe I'm just lucky, but with the exception of a quickly fixed software glitch in the Sport, we've had no reliability issues. I've also taken to using the Sport as the daily driver, in lieu of the Audi RS6, since it's incredibly quick an fast, handles amazingly well, and you can throw anything you want in it! I'd never "own" it, but love driving the hell out of it!!

    Enjoy yours!!!!
