I finally located a red Queensland Heeler that I am gettong tomorrow. I have not had a dog since I was a kid, so I'm pretty excited! I went to a couple of pet stores yesterday and was blown away with everything from the gourmet food to cool toys! Not sure I'm looking forward to the housebreaking process though!

Congratulations! The growth in the pet product and service market is astonishing and shows no signs of slowing down at all. I've got a Newfoundland and a Shih-tzu that are wonderful companions. Post some pics when you get the new pup.

    Gettin' a puppy Pete?

Well, that's one way to run the high-protein diet. Meat should be soft, but same rule applies....about 10 minutes per pound.

Yeah, good luck with that, gives you a new reason to subscribe to newspapers! :)

Thise breed full grown is about 20% smaller than an average full grown Lab.

Gilles: Trying to find puppy food without wheat or corn.

Get ready to keep him busy, Heelers are a working breed and need lots of exercise and mental stimulation. They are also a very dominant breed and require a firm hand and a owner who knows what they're doing or else you'll have trouble, so find a good book and read up. We have a 18 month old Heeler and he's a good dog, extremely smart, but a lot of work; it's not like owning a Golden Retriever or Lab. You're really going to have your hands full, so do your homework.

Not to get nutty sounding, but if you talk to a more holistic vet a lot of them now advise against puppy food. A lot of breeders as well. The belief is that it's too concentrated and they can grow too quickly. We put both our dogs on adult food right away. Also, in the future have the vet do a titer test before re-vaccinating your dog. Our 5 year-old hasn't needed a rabies booster in 3 1/2 years.

Feeding a pup steriods will not make him/her bigger than the breed with specific genetics. Just beefier. I always give my pups the best while they are growing: "science diet" or Iams, etc in the 1st 2 years. Makes a really healthy pup. The rest is all major brand.

"Beefier" is what I was talking about. It's important not to "beef" up a puppy too quickly, since their bones are soft and susceptible to damage that can affect them down the road. A lot of dogs develop joint problems when they get older--some from congenital issues, like dysplasia, but a lot are from joint damage due to weight problems and early stress on the joints. Also, not sure if you're a runner, but avoid jogging with your puppy until he/she is about 6 months old.
