First off, I enjoy watching NASCAR and Formula racing. To date, it's all been on TV. Since I will be attending the Shainghai F1 in October, I want to start understanding what a 'middle of the raod' fan needs to know. I don' want to become a finatic, but I don't want to be ignorant about the sport either.

Where is the best place to start to get into this a bit more?

    1. Everyone hates Ferrari unless they are Ferrari devoted fans {tifosi}.
1b. When Ferrari hasn't done anythung wrong but is blamed and they or their fans try to defend them, we are trying to over take the series and are trying to get away with murder.

    2. It's ok for anyone to do well in R&D or a race, unless the car is red.

    3. When Michael Schumacher stands on the podium and the German anthem plays, everyone thinks Hittler is comanding the attention of his army, even ferrari fans.

    4. The cars are soo refined and the tires play such a big part in the grand scheme of a race, that whoever has pole usually runs of to a victory and if they're fast, chances are their teammate is in P2 and will finish 2nd.

4b. Unless some no name hack with bad skin lands on pole then you know he'll pit within the first 4-7 laps for fuel and finish in his rightful place, dead last behind his teammate.

    5. And contact between 2 or more cars will be blamed on the least popular driver nearby. Clarification, he doesn't have to be involved, just nearby.

    6. Unless a red car wins by 6 laps and his team mate is in a distant 2nd but still 4 laps ahead of the field, it wasn't a good day.

    7. Ho's love it in the bathroom, don't bring the wife.

    8. Renault is a ferrari in French skin so it's ok to keep watching {hey at least it's not Minardi beating us}.

    9. I forget anything else that's good or important.

    10. I just thought there should be a 10.

Things that you should always remember:
    1) F1 is a team sport. It takes an entire package to compete and win.
    2) The F in F1 does not stand for Formula, it stands for Ferrari.
    3) The FIA is the regulatory body that oversees the rules of the sport.
    4) There is an old stupid donkey that controls the commercial rights to F1.

    5) FIA stands for "Ferrari Influenced Authority" (tifosi12)

    6) Michael Schumacher is the greatest F1 racer ever.

    LOL

There is "F1 for Dummies" book out there. Just as there is a "NASCAR for Dummies" book.

I do like your approach though to get educated about the sport. It makes it so much more interesting and enjoyable.

I'd also recommend to get a decent F1 game for your PC or game console. Not only do they get you more involved, they can also give you an idea of the tracks and the athmosphere and normally the games come with interesting booklets that tell you everything about the rules and the changes to the setup of the cars.

    11. Ignore 50% of posts regarding F1 as they are posted just to confuse, or in Imperials case in some sort of prayer to the almight Ferrari God.

I suggest reading up on F1 in the 60s and 70s, just to get some perspective on the watered down version of the sport we all watch today.

Tires play such a big roll in the lap times now, you might as well drop 2 cylinders from the Brigestone shod teams. That is a big problem. I want the same tires for every team.

When Ferrari wins, the sport flourishes. When Ferrari does not win, the sport suffers (economically). This is why Ferrari can get away with taking advantage of loopholes (remember the barge board incident?) and get away with it, but oh boy, let McLaren come up with a revolutionary idea (e.g. rear brake pedal), and they get slammed big time.

Schuey may be the *winningest* driver ever, but not the greatest. Anyone who routinely chops peoples' noses off at the start, and runs people off the road who try to challenge him, is not a great driver. I can't believe he did it again in Turkey (Webber). It wasn't even for track position this time (???)

I hear people say that they'd like to see Champ cars and F1 cars race on the same track. Well, they actually do, although not at the same time (Montreal). The best lap times of the champ cars would not even qualify (120% rule) to be in a Formula 1 race.

A top ASSCAR (oops, pardon), NASCAR team typically spends 10 million dollars a year. A top F1 team spends between 400 million (Ferrari) and 600 million (Toyota) per year.

A Formula 1 driver (Michael Schumacher) is the highest paid athlete on earth.

    I too recommend www.formula1.com.

Agreed in principle, however 4 years of domination caused viewership to go down, hence the effort to slow down Ferrari.

No, actually i like all forms of racing as well, i also watch NASCAR at times especially when the F1 and champcar seasons are over, and i do follow the standings of most forms of racing. I see it as having a common interest and no matter what form or racing you follow we all have the same common thread. A gearhead is a gearhead...........:)

Hmm, is it time for me to out myself?

NASCAR doesn't exite me much, however I have to admit, that a) I watched the last Daytona 500 and b) I went to Daytona (not during the race weekend) and have to say anybody who drives a car at speed through those turns instantly has my respect. F1 will always be my fav sport, but I can see the fascination with NASCAR.

Part of this "religious conversion" can be attributed to a buddy of mine who just today bought himself a real 2002 NASCAR racecar and told me I'll get to drive it. So there you have it, I'm very gullible.

Top Nascar teams spend 20M, Toyota spends 400M (less than Ferrari...but not that much less).

Tifosi12, I agree, but driving these cars on the edge is part of the challenge and the lure, for both drivers and spectators. Safety has come a long way in both car and track design, but should Tamburello have been altered because Senna died there? The first serious incident/injury that occurs during a standing start will see even that F1 tradition come under serious scrutiny. Then we might as well be watching CART or NASCAR...

Every team gets away with somthing every year, you just hear more about the Ferrari ones.

Everyone in F1 cuts across the track and everone has gone from side to sode all the way down the front stretch to keep other cars from passing. Get real.

Your numbers on NASCAR are off by 70%.

Michael Schumacher is NOT the highest paid athlete on earth. Where do you get this stuff from?

The above proves my #1 and #2 points about Formula One.

Michael Schumacher is the highest or the 2nd highest paid athlete on Earth(can't remember who top dog is). Tiger Woods being the other of note.

Schumi, with endorsements makes in excess of 80 year. I believe he is the highest salaried athlete on Earth (by a significant margin).

In the past yes, but I do not think this applies now as Ferrari have returned to the winning circle and bored everybody with constantly winning ... without even allowing the lowly team mate make a race of it.

Thus I think there has been renewed interest in F1 this year BECAUSE somebody else is winning.

    Pete
ps: And for those that keep going on about the rules changing to stop Ferrari winning, SoftwareDrone has reminded us all on how many rules were bent to return Ferrari to the winning circle in the first place ... what goes around comes around ;)

I can picture the FIA morons sitting around thinking how to make the sport more competitive and entertaining for everyone ......ive got it
lets just drop 2 cylinders from all the teams next year...and oh yeah you guys can all use these too, same brakes, tyres, chassis, and one last thing even less downforce!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The only formula involved with that is one for boredom.

Thanks for all of the replies. If it was not a joke, I'll look for F1 for Dummies! I'll be sure to read as much stuff as I can prior to attending the event. At the race, I will be in the Paddock level. Is that on the 'inside' of the track in Shanghai? I know that the tix for the three days was pretty pricey. What perks come with being in the Paddock area / level?

Tiger Woods with his endorsements make more than Schumacher over 100M for 3 years in a row a few years ago, so I assume it's even more now.
