so having just bought my dino (did i mention that yet?) i'd really like to get rid of the orgy of ferrari logos on the back of the car..does anyone know a good place in NY to do that? it would need to be painted, and the little holes filled....also, any idea of cost?

    thanks..

Phil - wait until you have another reason to touch up the rear end. The only one who will notice the Ferrari badges is you. And if you do remove them, every one will ask what kind of car it is. Why look for ways to spend money... there will be many opportunities.

I agree with Jim. Those badges (as long as there aren't too many) will save you a lot of frustration trying to explain what the car is and that it isn't a kit.

I have a small cavallino on the tail panel of each of my Dinos, but no Ferrari script. Some people don't know what they are, and others just have the irresistible urge to tell you, unbidden, that your Dino is NOT a Ferrari. I tell people that, technically, they are not, but then, the name on the cars' exterior was not the reason for their purchase. I wonder how most guys would feel if a total stranger, upon seeing their wives, felt the need to approach and tell them what their wives are NOT?

Congratulations on your Dino, and welcome to our group! You are also to be lauded in your desire to rid your car of incorrect badging.

IMHO, a Dino is a Ferrari. In fact, the photo above shows the same rare Ferrari factory paint which changes color in pictures and sun/shade, and Dino is the name of Enzo's first born son after whom the car was named.

The first thing I did on my Dino was to remove the horses. I prefer the holes.

Whether you believe a Dino is a Ferrari or not, nothing can justify cluttering and defacing its beautiful rear end with unoriginal, unappropriate and mismatched logos and scripts.

IMO they don't belong, and I congratulate phil for his sound intention.

If you want a Ferrari, buy one. Otherwise, just enjoy the greatest and most beautiful sportscar of all time, the Dino.

huzza sir! i doff my cap to you, and thank you everyone for all the advice...i tend to agree with julio here-if people think it's a kit car, well, i know it's not!...:) i used to have a lotus, and people would always think it was a kit...

I had a Lotus too, Phil - a 1963 Lotus 23. And I still have a 1969 Elan and a 1998 Elise. The 23, being a race car - really could be mistaken as a kit car, and I suppose the Elan (which were in fact also sold as kits) and the Elise as well. And even if one explains they are Lotuses, most people have never heard of Lotus anyway. BUT ... do those people really matter?

The enthusiast will know Lotuses and, of course, Dinos. He matters. Being knowledgeable, he might also suspect that we Dino owners have a deep-rooted insecurity because our cars aren't badged as Ferraris and therefor have a need to install prancing horses, Ferrrari emblems, etc. And of course we are not insecure.

The guy who can even think a Dino is a kit car isn't interested in cars and will never be. I don't think we should install prancing orses etc just to educate him, if indeed that is the reason we do those things.

Now, if an owner wants to install Ferrari badges on a Dino because he thinks it looks goo, that's another matter. It's his prerogative. Besides car guys are genetically programmed never to leave things well alone. I get tempted sometimes too, but everytime that happens I attach the Ferrari badge to my tool cabinet (even if it is made inthe US). Provides good relief.

Just my opinion, and I don't mean any disrespect.

    And welcome, Phil.

You will find in time that Ferrari badges and "is the Dino a Ferrari" are the most interesting and most discussed issues on the Dino chat pages. Always lots of fun.

i'm sure this may be heresy, but having had an 05 lotus elise, the driving experience is very similar to that of the dino, i have to say.....especially in terms of how you 'wear the car'...

Dan, I once went so far as to open my driver's door at the gas pump to show some ignoramus that the car was built by Ferrari! It's not that I was trying to valildate the car (or myself!). I just wanted to silence a know-nothing "know-it-all" and perhaps dispossess him of the desire to dis Dinos as sport. As for the cavallino on the tail panel: when I purchased 308 five-spoke star wheels for my first Dino, I made sure to replace the prancing-horse center caps with Dino caps. Bob Zambelli did the job perfectly for me. I like to tell those who are interested enough that the Dino has two pedigrees, one as a Dino and one as a Ferrari. The FIAT connection means little. After all, you'll find many Alfa and FIAT parts of various types in many older Ferrari models. When you add in the Pininfarina connection, you realize that there was a lot of cross-pollenation in the "good old days" of Italian carmaking. Fred

Personally i like the ferrari badge on the rear end together with the cavallino emblem.

It doesnt bother me what people say, its a Ferrari dino....period.

After calling over to see the progress of Nerodino's resto job, i popped into our local DIY warehouse. A guy came up to me and said beautiful car but its not a ferrari. to which i answered "why have you got one too".........end of conversation!!

spiteful i know but i couldnt help it

Call me a purist but I never had Ferrari badges on my Dino and don't like them when I see them applied to 246's or Fiat Dino's. A Dino is a Dino. That was good enough for me.

Respect the car for what is: a work of art.

I 've never been in a late Elise, Phil, but the view from the cockpit of a Series 1 Elite is very similar to that from a Dino. The front wings rise in an Elite as in a Dino. Same styling cues too, as in the side scoops feeding air to the engine. The designer Julian Thomson had a Dino when he was with Lotus and was inspired by it. I think he still has the Dino now. Hard to compare the handling, as the Elise is much lighter, very modern, and, well, a Lotus.

Curiously enough, since the Italians like to list their names directory-style, Dino would most likely have referred to himself as "Ferrari Dino." Similarly, Egidio Brandoli, whom I had the pleasure to meet at his restoration shop near Maranello three years ago, has as his logo the letters "BE." However, when I bought my first Dino in 1976, a young female neighbor who had been born in Italy said: "Oh, a Dino Ferrari!" Fred

Well spoken!! Don't like Ferrari badges either on a Dino 206 or 246 or the Fiat Dino's. They are DINO's !! Even the early 308 GT/4 had DINO badges on them...
