I am having some issues with oil not returning to the Ghibli's oil tank. I just dropped the oil tank hoping it was clogged but the issue seems to be the scavenger pump.

Has anyone have to deal with a scavenger pump issue? What was the problem and solution?

    Ivan,

Is this car known to you?

It may pay off to check for silicone worms blocking the scavenger. More and more people are using this cr*p to seal anything and everything, use way too mu8ch of it on the wrong surfaces and the excess ends up in the oil and blocks screens. It's a long shot, but if you don't get oil out of your engine back to the tank you have to start dismantling things anyway.

    Best,

    Jack.

You have no choice but to pull the front cover, the filter on the end of the pick up pipe/tube may be plugged, the front cover is magnesium and i,ve worked on a number of ghibli engines with corrosion issues in that front cover. I may have a spare set of gears. Dan

    Hi
May I ask a question are you checking the oil level with the engine running?
or are you checking the level in the tank after the car has been sitting for some time?

The reason is my Khamsin had a similar issue and it was found that the scavenge pump side clearance was far to big at 24Thou instead of 3 to 4 thou,

    Regards
    Graeme

I've checked the oil level it both ways. The oil is "disappearing" inside the engine and does not return to the tank even after the engine is off for some time. In other words, there is a lot more oil in the sump than there should be and not enough in the tank. I believe there should be 9 liters of oil in the tank and about 4 liters in the sump.

After many hours and many four letter words, I was able to pull the front cover with the engine still in the car.

I have yet to see anything obviously wrong which really bugs me as I like to see obvious problems, fix them, and move on. The screen in the pickup unit was clean and I did not see any cracks in the tube where it could have been sucking in air. Tomorrow I plan to test the pump with an electric drill to see if it is able to pull oil in from a container. I really want the pump to fail the test so I can focus on fixing it. Stay tuned ....

Thanks Dan. Good to know that gears are available if I need them. The housing looks very good without any corrosion. I need to do some bench testing and should know more tomorrow.

Ivan, you need to pull the gear, the shaft is locked in place with snap rings, if you don't have a puller (heartlandproducts) can make one, they made mine, when you replace it you need to heat the gear and quickly slide it on, this is assuming it won't pump oil when you bench test it. Dan
