Our local community magazine had an article on all the ghost airports. Our small community had about 12 grass and 1 paved private airports just 5 miles from DFW airport. Many pilots and mechanics had their own private strips. They are all gone now!

This image was in Southlake magazine of the airport Jennie and I heard rumors of close to our first house in Southlake. Two runways and extensive hangars there through 1996 when school district bought it. I rough outlined about where our lot was. Jennie and I heard rumors of a fatality crash, but just a few minor ground loops. A little amazing it was still there only 6 years before we bought. Mia races right where the runway was!

All over the southwest, you can still see the old AAF triangular runway layouts in use during WW-II. Elsewhere, pretty quickly reclaimed by grass and weeds, but the desert SW preserved them pretty well.

Several old AAF airports have been turned into residential fly-in neighborhoods here in FL.

Used to be quite a few in AK. Relative's coworker had grass strip behind his house. He used chamois to "filter" his gas. Plugged up the carb, engine out on takeoff. Killed himself and his son by crashing into his neighbor's house.

When I started flight training in 1969, the sectionals for the area showed 99 air facilities within Tarrant and Dallas counties, including many glider ports, grass strips, and helipads, etc. I wonder what that number is now.

Here’s our local sectional now, nothing left Southlake, Grapevine, Trophy Club etc.

I even wonder about Hillcrest although 2 dozen hangar homes it is surrounded by new homes and I haven’t seen a plane on it for 10+ years.

Resident landing only (or with permission) and only 14 planes registered to the airport. Looks like a few operations a day but really not active.

I suspect it will get swallowed eventually. It's too small to protect itself.
