OK, tonight I was on my way home after driving about 20 blocks I turn a corner and the rear wheel starts making a HUGE squealing/grinding, cyclic type noise - my first thought was "Oh boy, the engine's gonna seize"

Well I realized it was the wheel, I shut the engine off while rolling and put the clutch in, it kept making the same sound, I then stopped and started to roll and the sound was still there - I drove another block and the noise faded - another block and it was gone.

Drove for another 15 min at all different speeds and no noise.

    any ideas?

Sounds typical of a wheel bearing.

Here is how I would go about it.

    1. Jack up the rear, remove the wheel.
    2. Inspect the pads, caliper for wear, sign of freezing up.
    3. Inspect the CV joint for leaky boots
    4. Remove the rear rotor, inspect the parking brake mechanism, lube anything needs lubricating.
    5. Inspect the hand brake mechanism for binding.

If all is well, put it back. Drive it, if the noise comes back, then what is left is your wheel bearing.

Here is what i have seen about a dozen times in my 25 plus years of spinning spanners. Sometimes a tar covered stone will flick up and land fair in the calliper and scream like blue murder for about 15 mins. It either gets munched up or just drops out as easily as it got in there. These little stones make one heck of a noise!!

This is a good reminder to not overthink it right now. I have about 14 years with these cars and have not had to replace a bearing. Not that it doesn't happen, but bearing death in our low mileage cars is rare. If you had 80K miles maybe more likely. Or Ernie's car. ;)
