For the loser ... I have a Villeneuve T Shirt ... :)
I don't think it will make a blind bit of difference to the value of 308's TBH. The fact that a 308, that Gilles Villeneuve thraped to death and farted all over the leather sold for a high price at auction, isn't going to make all 308's suddenly worth tens of thousands more. In fact, most prospective 308 owners will not even be aware of this car, or that it has sold for the price it did (Notice any general international coverage about the sale on TV or in the press? - Thought not!). Ayrton Senna once owned a Ferrari 348, and if that car came up for sale, it would go for big money simply because it was Senna's, but I can guarantee you that the value of every other 348 wouldn't suddenly rocket up because of it!
Bad day? It's certainly positive rather than negative that some collectors battled this car to a high price. Villeneuve's use of a 308 is a solid part of the model's heritage. Magnitudes more important for me than Magnum PI, for sure. Myriad small seemingly irrelevant elements build to create something's value & this is one of them.
Perhaps you're right. I certainly am not (as a 1978 308GTS owner) banking on it. However, I've seen stranger things happen in the Ferrari market, or in life.
Thing is he always drove flat out all the time.... in any car. His wife would lye down in the rear seat footwell, she was so scared of being in the car with him. His driving philosophy was that he always had a gap he could fit.
Nice follow-up of this spectaular sale! https://magazine.ferrari.com/en/people/2018/07/30/news/villeneuve_ferrari_308_gts_sale_spectacular-44878/
Thanks for posting, that's a great follow up story. So for those who believe Villeneuve's ownership is unimportant to a car's value, how about it being the 2nd GTS ever & the one that appeared in the factory brochure? Any better?
