    After lunch with some people today I ended up with more than half of an extra-large pizza left over. I was going to bring it home for tomorrow's lunch for my family (well, really for breakfast).

    Working in downtown Dallas right now, I've gotten used to being asked for money two to three times a day. As I was leaving the building, I thought to myself, "What are the odds that I'll make it the TWO blocks to the parking lot without being asked for something..." I have a policy of not giving money to beggars (I give to institutions that give food/services, but not directly to people), but I have given food on several occasions. I wanted this pizza, though, and I'd already mentioned it to my wife.

    I got to the parking lot, and was maybe 50 feet from my car, when this scraggly guy comes literally running up behind me, "escuse me sir! Escuse me sir... my name is ------- an' I've got AIDS an they'z gonna do surgery on my prostate (pulls up shirt and lowers pants to reveal lower abdomen), ah' got four dollas but I need some money to get sumtin to eat at da shelta..." I was going to ask what homeless shelter started charging for dinner - but I turned and said, "I don't have any money for you, but here, have this pizza for dinner." He said thanks and took the gourmet pizza.

    I turned back towards my car, feeling good about helping.

    "Escuse me sir! Sir..." He began talking to me again. "Do you got any change? I don't need no dollas but do you got any change or coins or somethin?" he groveled.

    Then I was mad. "No, I don't have any money for you. I don't carry change. I just gave you a dinner." I turned and walked away, and he headed off. I passed him in my car a few minutes later, carrying the pizza box asking two women for money.

    Am I crazy, or was that rather surreal that the guy said he wanted money for dinner, I gave him more than a meal's worth of pizza and he took it and asked for money along with it?!

    Seriously though, if Cash is involved giving directly to charities and not to the individual is key in helping that person out.

    It may sound cold but I don’t have a problem passing a “Bum” and not giving him anything. “Homeless” people in the USA are far better off than their counterparts in other parts of the world and I speak from experience having seen and worked with these people in 3rd world countries where death from starvation, exposure or other causes are an everyday occurrence, not just for the mentally ill but also the competent!

    Only in vegas do you see idiots waiting in line to play video poker at 7-11!!!

    Ryan,

    That's unreal. You've just provided this guy with food, so he doesn't have to go hungry for a meal, and he's not satisfied with it. I had an experience like this a couple of years ago. One night after hitting a couple of pubs with buddies, we stopped at a late night pizza place. Didn't finish the pizzas, so we split them up & headed back to the car. On the way, there were these two homeless guys asking for change. My buddy gives them the rest of our pizza - we've had enough & these guys look like they need it more than we do. So what do they do, open the box, decide they don't like the toppings and start offering the pizza to passersby!

    In my opinion you did the right thing.

    I don't see why you are suprised! This guys life has become so bad. He probably lives under a bridge overpass. He begs for money/food. Have you ever been so low that you had to BEG some complete stranger off the street for CHANGE! I understand what your saying! However...put yourself in his shoes. If he doesn't ask...he won't get it, right? It was worth his while. Hell, maybe you did have 50 cents in pants that he could have got. I guess it all comes back to "you won't get it if you don't ask for it".

    This guy is full of ****, probally lives in subsidised housing, and has found a way to 'earn' money withought 'working.'

    For every real homeless hard-luck story, there are 1,000 pretending deadbeats (and about 6 moron college students.)

    Hmmm... my take has always been, "You won't get it if you don't work for it".
