Yes, some of the nuts talk about it but shutting down space exploration bcus it pollutes is like shutting down hospitals bcus they pollute

Some idiots at Priuschat were whining about how airplanes are so inefficient until I explained to them how jet engines today are massively more efficient and quiet than in earlier decades

That's the one that tilted my green credulity meter. Ozone is an unstable molecule. It falls apart on its own. It takes an energy source to create ozone. In the upper stratosphere, the only energy source is -- solar radiation. (E.g. the ozone isn't the means of UV absorption -- it's the by-product) And the hole is over antarctica -- a well-known fun-in-the-sun locale.

Why antarctica, when most of the industrial nations are in the northern hemisphere? Why isn't there a bigger one over the north pole?

Or, for that matter, if it was caused by hairspray, why isn't the hole over Brooklyn?

You will find, after a time, that "political correctness" usually isn't "correct" by any other metric.

(Have you heard them debating in MD over how spraying someone with a garden hose can be a form of "sexual assault"? A career in politics seems to require the ability to disconnect from sanity.)

Sorry, this one is a done deal. While there are a number of sound, credible scientists that still question if man is causing climate change, no credible source questions that the destruction of the ozone layer is real.

The US banned CFCs as a propellant (e.g. hairspray) in 1978. Hence, no ozone over Brooklyn (LOL).

I saw another show about the Clovis people (first settlers of North America), and they talked about the short ice age about 12000 years ago. The theory is that is was caused by a disruption in the the Atlantic "Conveyor Belt of Life". I learned it is not only the difference in temperature, but also the salinity of the artic water. Basically, the less salty, the less the water cycles back toward the equator. As the glaciers receded past the Great Lakes, the North Atlantic got a huge dump of fresh water, and this caused the Belt to stop.

But this appears to support my own personal layman's position, that the Earth is largely self-regulating in the long term. The "Mini Ice Age" was only a few years. As the northern latitudes cooled, ice and glaciers built back up, locking the fresh water. This allowed the ocean to become saltier again, the Belt picked up speed again, and carried the equatorial warmth north again.

Yes, it is serious. Also serious is the idea of just "DOING SOMETHING NOW", no matter what it may be, because we have been told to "be very afraid".

What I am objecting to is the idea that if we suddenly stop driving cars, trucks and busses (not to mention railroads, ships, and airplanes) and shut down most electrical power in North America, this will somehow make things better for our children.
