    Hi Guys
My 40 year old GT4 seems to be going through a one thing after another phase at the moment.
Now the alternator light is dimly glowing all the time, regardless of load.
Any ideas what this might be?

I have tried to fix all issues on the car myself, could this be a case of rebuilding the alternator? Changing/Upgrading the regulator and brushes?

    thanks in advance

    Nick

First thing to do is measure the battery voltage at the battery terminals (both AC and DC) with the engine running at idle and ~2K RPM. The light will glow on your model if the DC voltage from the alternator is lower OR HIGHER than the battery.

it is likely either the alternator or the belt. I pulled mine out and had a local alternator shop rebuild mine - they charged my $60. Standard Bosch stuff. Yes, it is only new brushes and regulator.

I've had this - belt was loose. I'd check that first.

If you need to get it rebuilt then there is a fellow over at Burghfield just south of Reading who can fix it. He did mine a few years back & he's very cheap, doesn't care what car it comes off & therefore no "dancing donkey tax". £40+ parts+VAT to rebuild it.

If you want to do it yourself then I think he will sell you the parts.

Check your ground strap which should be under the car At the back drivers side. Clean it up, but would say it’s the rectifier on the alternator. Best thing would to get the alternator overhauled, far cheaper than buying a new on. Easy to get done. I had same issue and got mine overhauled with new rectifier. Cost should be around £50-70.

This has happened with every 308 I've ever owned. It's bright to start with but even after the alternator "kicks in" always has a faint glow which can only be seen in low light.
