I just went to pick up my 12 y.o. from a friend's house. Sitting in the driveway was a brand new, still with dealer paper plate, Caddy CTS in black.

Very nice and expensive looking car. In front of a Jim Walter house.
(similar to a trailer but without the tongue sticking out the end.)

I definitely see more new American cars on the road these days than foreign. Some of the new, foreign models (Honda Civic, Toyota Tacoma, Nissan Titan) are just ugly in my opinion. American cars are definitely not what they once were and that's a good thing. Dane

    Yes they are.........

And Chrysler and I think Ford are matching the "employee discount" idea....

I'm tempted to trade in the 05 Xcab Chebby truck I bought a few mo ago for one with a bit more power... I opted for the V6 auto, and it is slooooowww... and being an automatic I feel like I pay less attention than when I drove a stick.
With the incentives and the "employee discount" I'm thinking I could get a comparable V8 with stick, be in it for the same exact money, and the gas mileage would be exactly the same, according to my research.

Right now, according to Kelly Blue Book, the trade in value exceeds what I paid for it 3 months ago. Does anyone know how accurate the KBB trade in numbers are?

I haven't researched the KBB trade-in values, but I will tell you this:
Most dealers (in my experience) will use NADA to value a trade-in. And also, since the dealers aren't pulling in much money on this sale, they will lowball you for your trade-in. Even further than usual.

Next time your here in Canada take note of how many Domestic cars vs the imports. Imports by far are more popular here. The only domestics I see are the Chrysler300 and minivans and of course the pick-up trucks. As far as sedan sales go..most are imports.

Good point. If they were to put this one on their used lot, it may be difficult to move since the new ones are so cheap. Or at least that's what I'd tell me if I were a dealer trying to offer a lower trade in number.

Oh well, I paid my money and I made my choice. I guess it could be worse, I could be a starving african child with aids. Or something.

this is so true. The only real domestics I see are the 300. Straight 300, not with the hemi. Trucks and what not.

I saw a lot of Neons, Stratuses, and Sebrings in Canadia last time I was there (new 300 wasn't out yet). Lots of Aerostar Sports too. That one was strange to me. When I lived in Alaska, I saw maybe 3 or 4 Aerostar Sports total. In Canadia about 70% or more of the Aerostars were the Sport model. Weird.

I don't think Chrysler is doing it on the 300 and Ford is not giving it on the Mazda/Volvo/Jaguar line; at least GM is giving it on the Saabs....knocks about $5K off the MSRP.

All current discounts do is let buyers buy the 05 inventory.. it doesnt address the real problems that these companies have.. Now they arent going to see alot of "buyers" for 06.. cause they just bought in 05.. It certainly doesnt attract they buyer of the "Nissan's altimas, z's etc." or attract the buyer of the "BMW" crowd or attract the buyer of the "lexus or acura or infinity" crowd.
Makes me glad I dont own any of these crappy stocks/bonds

American products suck. Nothing new and "groundbreaking" has really comeout.. (cept maybe the ford explorer hybrid) but even that doesnt represent a good new value.. They need new, creative, slick products but i guess im preaching to the choir on this.. Nissan and Toyota's entry to the "large truck" market really spells trouble for the Ford and Chevy truck markets.. (which was really a niche market at one time)

One bright note however,,, One GM product that is gaining a little hype and hopefully sales is the new 4cyl convert by pontiac. (although i forgot the name "soltice" maybe???) It has some pretty slick lines on it.

    Mike,

There are some very nice American vehicles. This promotion is solving a short term problem. It is moving the cars from the extra lots the auto makers have had to rent (because they were not selling) and off of dealers floors. The major problem facing the automakers is the expensive labor and pension programs that makes them uncompetitive. No amount of fancy marketing is going to solve it. That makes putting money into R&D even harder. Brace yourself, because if this industry goes, so will others.......Learn to speak Chinese.

The real prob is come next month the buyer is going to ask why he has to pay $3000 more for the car than he would have last week. They have created a monster with this program, and its going to be hard to get out of. I know they plan to put lower stickers next year, but it won't match this deal.

And like Dave says, think what it will do to the resale of the existing late model cars and trucks bought this year or late last year. Those loyal customers just got hosed for $3000 on their residual value just as if they were robbed at gun point.

This deal hurts everyone who currently owns a GM, due to decreased resale, that will ripple all the way down to 6 year old cars, it hurts future sales, it instills....no...it galvanizes the idea that you are a chump if you don't get a huge discount on a GM car, it hurts the dealers with decreased sales in 2 months etc. Not well thought out; simply a knee jerk response to an immediate problem.

If GM is smart, they'll use this to their (slight) advantage. Since 85+% of the owners of GM vehicles will be upside down on their loans due to the decreased resale value, and won't be able to unload them, GM will tout it in advertisements as "GM customers keep their cars longer than any other brand" or something to that effect.

Hey no fair..But you know what I mean. Don't make us start production of the Bricklin again!

Oh and for your personal knowledge..there are many domestic vehicals which the only place they are built are in this country. The Ford FreeStar and I belive the Chrysler 300 series of cars as well.

But yes in the grand sceam of things they could be considered imports..but you know they are not.

I am consering a brand new SAAB 9-2

    Essentially a upscale rebadged WRX.

But with the discount is over 4000 less then the subaru.

GM might as well just keep the deal going forever.

Ford will just do it next month and steall all their sales.

My girlfriend's father also folded and bought a new Equinox this week. He's always had the employee discount but I guess it worked out to be ridiculously cheap with rebates. And this is from a guy who had been driving a 15 year-old Volvo wagon that he swore he'd never get rid of.

If you can get in on the deal and pay cash you'll be way ahead of the game..
