I saw this 1948 Gmund at the Art Center College of Design Classic show. It is one of the early 356 all alloy coupes still made in Gmund, Austria before they up and moved to Zuffenhausen in Germany. I heard that it was bought in Sweden 20 years ago but haven't read how his scout found it and what it was advertised for. I would have to venture today it is a million dollar car but am only curious about when it was "smoked out" in Sweden. I think he made a couple of small mods so he could drive it in different events--he races a more modern Porsche today (like at the Pikes Peak hillclimb where is time is 9 minutes) and also has a couple of Porsche pure car cars fitted out for the street. Jeff is a photographer whose work was often in Road & Track and I think he has also moved from still pictures into filming commercials.

By the way I think Seinfeld trying to buy a Gmund was what shot the market up so much in early Porsches. Once word got out he was trying to buy one, prices went way up.

His Gmund is one of the first 50, might be the last of that initial run--050.

    Fantastic.

Those babies were genesis. OK maybe the Tatra and the Airflow really were but whatever. Saw one and a very old beetle at Stugggart museum.
Story goes the old man had no one with the adequate skill to properly hammer the panels for the coupes. Dr. Porsche or his assistant had to resort to frequenting the local gasthaus where at the bar (in a sorry state) sat the legendary body man (name unknown) of Gmund. Porsche had to beg and cajole Herr panel beater off the stool and into der werkshop. It worked and the rest is history.
