Sorry, I'm very sad, and very angry, right now...Someone ran into me in the brand new Porsche (Cayman S) tonight... I was in the right lane going straight, very slowly in traffic, and a guy to the left of me just turned into me. HUGE dent in the rear driver-side bumper. Right on the corner. Collapsed the corner, in fact... I'm almost positive the entire rear bumper of the car has to be replaced... Called the cops, they made a report. Guy is an Israeli tourist or on a work visa or something. No insurance, and couldn't give me or the cops a straight answer as to who owned his car. F*CK!!!!!

I will try to post a picture tomorrow, right now I'm just too pissed. Any guesses on how much this is going to cost (aside from my $500 deductible which I'm going to have to pay and stand zero chance of being able to recover from this assh*le)?! How long will it take if my dealer has to order a new rear bumper from Porsche?! I was supposed to "unveil" the car to a bunch of friends next weekend... Any chance in hell I'm going to be able to fix this before then...?

Anyone have any recommendations for excellent Porsche body work in the Philly area?

Call Mike Franz at Delphais Collision 610-431-1660.

Does excellent work, really great, on modern or antique. He just fixed my wife's benz, took him 4 days. You would never know it was hit. He is a great car guy too. Also did my Dino, stem to stern bare metal repaint.

Call him Monday, 1st thing, I'd be surprised if he couldn't put t back together for you by the weekend.

Tell him I sent you, nothin' in it for me except brownie points for the next time I need him. With 3 kid drivers, I practially have him on retainer.

As to cost, without pix, hard to tell. I got a door replaced on the Mercedes and a couple other spots fixed for under $3K, had the entire front of my kid's Honda done for about $5K, and that was two fenders, a hood, light and some suspension work, along with quite a bit of paint.

The Dino cost $23K, don't use that one for comparison purposes.

Wow, that sucks big time.. Sorry to hear, but at least you are ok.

Question, why should you have to pay any $$ out of pocket, don't you have unisured motorist coverage, and also, if the cops showed up, and there was a police report filed, shouldn't your insurance be able to track down the owner of the car, and go after him and his policy, if he has one ? I would make damn sure my insurance agent were working FOR me, and fight this tooth and nail to make sure I have no out of pocket expenses...

I would do several things in this situation. Research the laws in your state in regards to insurance covering depreciation loss from an accident. In VA and in other states, you can claim depreciation loss from an accident if you are not at fault. Being a buyer that looks for frame damage all the time, the impact you describe could have pushed the bumper support in the rear panel or quarter panel. If rewelding is necessary or they have to rework the quarter then its technically frame damage. This will really hurt the value of the car. If its just a bumper replacement and paint then you shouldnt worry at all. If they start repainting other panels that got scraped or blend then too much paintwork is not good either.

I agree with Dave, Mike Franz is terrific, he did my GTC4 bumper, he does the tough jobs for ALGAR, drives a Dino and a 330, you can trust him to do it

In addition to this, your policy may have a new car replacement program. Since it was a new car, you might get them to just get you a new car since this incident will seriously hurt the value of your car.

Good luck in whatever you do. Glad you are ok.

"If" there is NO frame damage and its only cosmetic I would consider paying the entire expense out of pocket to keep your vehicle from being listed on a Car-Fax report which is alarming to a potential future purchaser even if the damage is small in nature. They will never totally believe you that the damage was only cosmetic and the resale value lost may be more than the current financial pain.

^^^ I agree. If you can't do this, be sure to take photos to share with the next buyer should they bring up the carfax.

Too late for that----A police report was written, which is a public record-- Carfax will have that info in no time...

He/she is probably here on a work Visa for the holidays.
There are quite a few people that bring these guys over to run their carts in malls.
There are 30+ in my mall alone.
In case you have trouble locating the person in question......

Contact the person who brought them here to work (if this is the case).

go to your nearest major mall, I would bet they will be there at one of the carts.
If you do see them, contact the mall management and get the name of the owner of the carts.
Usually 5-10 carts during the holidays are owned by the same person.

look for the cheap flying copters, and something else that flies and looks like a spinning hat.

these people work 6 days, 11 hours+ a day. Shouldn't be hard to find them

Just my .02 cents if you need it :)

Usually the cell phones and the others you mention are there all year, with 3-6 month leases.

These others are there from November thru the middle of January (at the latest)

Thanks Carbon, I'm fine, nothing more than massive stress!

I swear to god, they're nuts here (no offense to anyone in Philly on the board), but seriously... I've lived and/or driven in Beirut, Amman, Athens, New York, New Jersey, LA, Austin, Houston, Dallas, San Francisco, LA, Miami *just to name a few* and I can tell you there seems to be a higher than usual number of idiots on the street here. The guy who hit me actually told me he felt bad because he was so impressed with my car he was taking pictures of it! Gee, wonder why he wasn't paying attention.

Ha... yeah, I wouldn't ever use a Ferrari for comparison, especially having been through a 308's service bills :D

Thanks for the reference... Is there no point in calling my dealer who sold me the car about six weeks ago and seeing what he recommends?

Damned if you do, damned if you don't. I called the cops when I realized the guy wasn't a local and didn't appear to have an insurance card that I could get info from. Never thought about the Carfax/future sales issue.

I'm not expert, but I would be a little surprised if there was any frame damage. But of course I won't know until someone looks at the car.

Interesting. Wouldn't have thought to look there. Guy said he was going back to Israel this week...

I'm not sure now whether my first call tomorrow morning should be to Mike Franz, dealer or insurance...? I think I probably need to call them all, but in what order...?

I recommend you call the insurance company first. They need to know immediately that you were hit by an uninsured foreign national who might be leaving the country in a week. Put the responsibility on them to do the follow-up asap. If you hesitate to inform them immediately, they might give you more grief than normal. They may also want to point you to their recommended collision shops. Insist that you want Mike Frantz to have an opportunity to bid on the repair. He's your second call. He's very good and reasonably priced. He did my Dino, down to bare metal also, and I've seen other examples of his collision repair work on high-end luxuary and sports cars that were in bad shape . . . he's very good because he cares. Third (or not at all) call the dealer. He will have favorite shops that he will recommend . . . and, of course, the bill will be adjusted accordingly for the middle man, the dealer.

So sorry about the Cayman S, a lovely Porsche for a reasonable price. Mike will make it right, but probably not by this coming weekend.

    Bill
