Huh? Who died and made you King? Since when is legitimate criticism of a self-severing thread against the rules of F-Chat?

Hi Carb, I'm leaving Monday to go visit Europe for a month (London/Paris/Dublin/Lisbon/Barcelona). I'm traveling on a "just-graduated-student" budget, so I assume my budget for the trip may be similar to yours. I'll post (or pm if you like) my thoughts and opinions upon my return in June if you would like.

All the best with your plans, not sure when your planning on heading out.

Carbon, this is not a good time to running off to Europe unless you have a job waiting for you there. Stay in the US, get a job working in a bar, restaurant, warehouse, loading docks, or whatever & pay off your debts.

They aren't. That doesn't mean we need more of the same though, does it?

Besides, if self serving threads were against the rules, you would have about three posts, right?

Now, I'm really confused. You know, you really ought to post Dave's rules because they are apparently different from the public F-Chat rules.

Your confusion is most unfortunate. There are no rules prohibiting self serving posts. Show me that one. Just about every post, in some shape or form, is a self serving post.

Why don't we do this. You continue to post your poetic, self serving slop, and rage against my moderating, and I'll continue to try and do my best to follow Rob's rules for moderating.

Oh, and they aren't exactly rules. They are more like guidelines. A set of suggestions. You know, nebulous, amorphous, malleable.

Carb, go now. True, our dollar isn't worth much in Europe right now, but what other time would you be able to go. Once you have a steady job, good luck asking for 1-2 months vacation time. Some people have to have everything planned out in advance, analyzing their options before making the right decision. Some can go with the flow and experience life as it happens. If you can do the latter, you'll have the time of your life.

I backpacked Europe for 2 months after my junior year of college (couldn't wait 'till I graduated to do it). I started out with a schedule, a plan, and a list of things I wanted to see and do. After about a week, I abandoned it. I had more fun meeting new, different people (locals and tourists), than I did going on tours. Seeing the Eiffel Tower was so uneventful for me. I met a girl in Paris who was working on her masters in Art History and she actually went to school at the Louvre. So I had my own personal guide to the city. I ended up in this situation in a few other cities as well.

I had a Eurail pass that allowed me to travel by train as much as I wanted for 2 months, so I could just hop on a train and go somewhere else whenever I wanted. I'm not going to give a play by play of the entire trip, but in the end, I had experienced each of these cities: Madrid, Barcelona, Paris, Nice, Berlin, Oberammergau, Munich, Warsaw, Kraków, Gdańsk, Szczecin, Prague, Vienna, Rome, Venice, Naples, Anacapri. I know there's others, I just can't remember. I had the best time of my life, so I did it again the next summer. Except that time, I just did Poland and Czech Republic.

Get a rail pass. Trains are one of the best ways to meet new people! You'll find plenty of other back packers on them. Stay in hostels (you can find them for $10-20 USD per night). Don't eat in restaurants, go to the local market and get bread, meats, cheeses, beer, and wine (I did that a lot). Don't you dare go to a McDonald's!:D I'm so excited now having just reflected on my past trips, that I may pack up and do it again this summer!:D

Anyways, I think you should do it. Take off and find yourself.:)

I would think backpacking through Europa would at best cost you about $15k for a few months. That and the fact that I bet it will be hard as hell to get any type of short term job there would put someone with no reserves in REAL trouble VERY quickly.

What does an American have to do to get a job in the EU anyway? Even a crap job like washing dishes?

And BTW, I do not and never had a trust fund.

Go and have fun. When I went to France for 3 months I lived off of fruit, bread, wine and cheese. Went camping and had a blast. You may find it is cheaper than staying in NYC. Try couch surfing you can meet some folks on the web with similar interests and stay free. We did this in the punk rock days in the 80's and there is a much better network now. Another great place is Buenos Ares Argentina but the best bet is to rent an apartment.

    PUB CRAWLS!!:D

The one I went on in Rome was organized by a couple of Americans. They came the year before and decided to stay. The cost was 20 or 30 Euros (6 years ago). We gathered across the street from the Colosseum and met the other people joining in on the crawl. For the first hour, we just chatted and drank as much beer and wine as we wanted (provided by the organizers). Then we traveled around to 7 or 8 pubs, receiving a complimentary shot at each one. Cool little pubs that I would not have found on my own.

Another way to make money is to teach English classes. I think this is more popular in Eastern Europe, because a larger percentage of the people don't speak English. You don't even need to speak their language, because the whole class is taught in English.

Carb, I agree, go now while you're still young and enjoy yourself. I went to Ireland for a month a couple years back and while the exchange rate was bad you could get away being there cheaply (staying with families or cheap hostels). Or hell, make some friends out there and crash with them for free. Either way, should be a hell of an experience, let me know how it goes brotha.

A little while ago this thread was closed by Dave; now it's open again!

What the heck is going on?

If NNO has some debts to pay off, if he has a conscience and integrity, he should definitely take care of those matters before he even thinks about spending money on frivolity.

My Dad taught me that "a man is only as good as his word"!

p.s. It appears that NNO has disassociated himself from this thread. That can only mean that he has no defense for the claims against him. I used to be the 'BANK' for many so-called 'FRIENDS', loaning them money. Usually I was never repaid!

My dad taught me to mind my own business.

I dont know the story and dont want to. I think that it should be dealt with the people involved. Its immature to make it public instead of just tackling the issue at hand. If I owe someone money or if they owe me money then I will deal with that with him and only him. I understand the camaraderie on the site and I am all for it but somethings I dont want to know about other peoples personal info unless they disclose it and ask for help.

Thanks, and I didn't mean it as a personal attack on NNO either, although he did admit his indebtedness in another thread.

I was wrong in assuming those debts haven't been paid. Antony, you seem like a reasonble man and I respect your .02.

    +1. Very well stated, Dale.

If you go to the EU, remember that some countries have a limit as to your stay. France for example is 90 days, any longer and you have to prove income. This is becoming the norm in the EU and many countries will adopt this stance shortly, so 90 days on the continent as a whole with 90 days before you can return. Carte de Sejour, I get one every trip.

The dollar stinks, even if you stay in hostels it is not going to be cheap to eat.

Why not - I don't know how old you are but some cheaper travel opportunities such as Interrail go away with age and one's cost of living increases in the expectation of increasing luxury (ie slum it now not was you get older) - I'd guess through the summer season there's cash-in-hand jobs pretty much anywhere eg bars in resorts or fruit picking anywhere - do you have any language skills apart from an approximation to English ?

Yes its a little expensive now but your total spend will be low and by the time the dollar is back somewhere more favourable your luxury expectations will cost a whole load more anyway

You know not of what you speak.

Please try to ascertain the facts before you insert your hoof in your mouth.

This thread was not closed by me.

What I asked was for it to stick to Carbon's question, which is apparently a difficult task for some of the folks here. I know that Hutch has a raging hard on for Carbon, and myself as well, which makes me question his, um... well, never mind that.

I dunno, it just seems that these threads have become as common as "The Timing Belt Threads", or the even more droll, "Wodden Ferrari" pix.

Having said that, I'd suggest a belt change every three years, just like the factory suggests, and here's the picture...

So why not take a trip. Sounds perfectly acceptable in the Bazarro world you live in.

I'm amazed actually at the set of balls it would take to come on here and talk about wasting more money.
