Nagoya Castle, Aoba-jyo, Chunichi Dragons Baseball Stadium, & if you like girls, Sakae-cho. Be careful though. There're some rip-off place. Ask hotel concierge, and they maybe able to help.

Nagoya-haku has been un-popular based on what I read & heard from my friends & magazine article.

Food is pretty good, especially Sanuki Udon!!!

Nagoya isn't the most touristy of places in Japan. About an hour from Nagoya on the local train is Inuyama Castle. MUCH better than Nagoya Castle, which scored a direct hit during WWII. The foundation is intact, but the rest is rebuit. Nothing like an ancient castle with elevators and air conditioning. The one in Inuyama is the real deal and has some nice views from the top. Nara and Kyoto aren't too far from Nagoya.

If you like sushi, there's a great sushi kaiten (conveyor belt sushi) in the JR station. It is on one of the upper floors (8-12?) where most of the restaurants are. There's also a shrine in Nagoya. Japanese baseball games are always interesting to go to (a beer and some squid balls please). Check to see if there are any sumo tournaments that time of year. They are every 2 months and rotate around Japan. When I was there last summer there happened to be one in Nagoya.

is sakae similar to the chicken ranch/sherri's ranch in pahrump, nevada? Or is like that one seen in rush hour 2 where jackie chan goes to that massage parlor.

    Sakae has both types.

You can also check out exotic car dealers in Nagoya area, too.

    Clothes - more
    Electronics - same or more
    Music/movies - way more
Jewelry - depends, some higher some lower

In general the cost of goods is higher. Plus the dollar isn't was it used to be. My first time there I was getting 120 yen/dollar, so shopping was pretty good. While you are there, food isn't too expensive assuming you stay away from the swanky joints. It's easy to eat for $4-7 a meal there. And when you go, make sure you go to the bakeries. That was the biggest surprise for me.

With the $1 = 105 yen, most things are going to be expensive. I was looking at getting a Nikon F5 at the end of last year in Ginza, damn thing is cheaper in the states.

Electronics will be newer generation stuff, but not all of it is designed for export, so the manual might be in Japanese (power is the same, so don't worry about that). A bit pricy, but if you have to be 6-12 months ahead of the curve, great selection.

All the Japanese you have to know:

    She ma sen. (Excuse me)
Nama biro. (Draft beer: Ashahi or Sapporo only, Kirin = the local Bud)
    Domo arigato. (Thank you)

When you get drunk, just use "domo" and bow a lot. You'll fit in. They'll think you're a regular if you are in a suit and tie...

    Lets not go there...

So that's what they meant in the 80's song "Big in Japan" :D

Hmm, on seconds thoughts, the line wasn't from Big in Japan... but it was definately from another 80's song. Anyone remember the name? I think it was used in the chorus of the song.

    Mr. Roboto Lyrics

    Domo arigato, Mr. Roboto,
    Mata ah-oo hima de
    Domo arigato, Mr. Roboto,
    Himitsu wo shiri tai

    You're wondering who I am-machine or mannequin
With parts made in Japan, I am the modren man

I've got a secret I've been hiding under my skin
My heart is human, my blood is boiling, my brain I.B.M.
So if you see me acting strangely, don't be surprised
I'm just a man who needed someone, and somewhere to hide
To keep me alive-just keep me alive
Somewhere to hide to keep me alive

I'm not a robot without emotions-I'm not what you see
I've come to help you with your problems, so we can be free
I'm not a hero, I'm not a saviour, forget what you know
I'm just a man whose circumstances went beyond his control
Beyond my control-we all need control
I need control-we all need control

I am the modren man, who hides behind a mask
So no one else can see my true identity

    Domo arigato, Mr. Roboto, domo...domo
    Domo arigato, Mr. Roboto, domo...domo
    Domo arigato, Mr. Roboto, domo...domo
Thank you very much, Mr. Roboto
For doing the jobs that nobody wants to
And thank you very much, Mr. Roboto
For helping me escape just when I needed to
    Thank you-thank you, thank you
I want to thank you, please, thank you

The problem's plain to see: too much technology
Machines to save our lives. Machines dehumanize.

The time has come at last
    To throw away this mask
    So everyone can see
    My true identity...
