Not many Space Shuttle launches left and it's something I have always wanted to see. Looks like there is one scheduled for 12 Nov and I went ahead and got some tickets to fly out to Florida. I'm sure it can be seen from pretty much all over the area but is there any kind of special place at the space center to go and watch launches? Anything in particular that would be good to know?

You'll need to purchase a launch viewing ticket to see it on the NASA property (causeway). I went out there for the STS-128 night launch, which was scrubbed (at 1:26AM for a 1:36AM launch :( ). I'm not sure how much tickets cost since I was in a car for NASA employees.

This map is centered on the NASA causeway: http://wikimapia.org/#lat=28.5124443&lon=-80.6108093&z=12&l=0&m=b

About 5 miles north is LC39A and just northwest of that is 39B.

When I go to see launches that aren't on NASA property, I got to a lock next to Port Canaveral. It's about 10 miles from the launch pad and on a clear day, you can see the shuttle on the pad.

    Centered again: http://wikimapia.org/#lat=28.4077086&lon=-80.6379318&z=12&l=0&m=b

Here's a view from the lock, 10 miles out, for STS-124. You can barely see the shuttle (to the right of the pole in the center). The VAB is all the way on the left of the photo. This is with the Rebel XT with kit lens: http://img85.imageshack.us/img85/8088/img0533.jpg

View from the causeway at the night launch. Shuttle can easily be seen. STS-128: http://img85.imageshack.us/img85/2871/img0866m.jpg

Mark, were you able to get to see the launch this afternoon? Weather was great and I had a good view from Orlando. I know the launch schedule was Nov 12th when you made this thread and you said you purchased tickets so hopefully you got to see it.

I know someone that was able to catch the launch today up close for the first time. He flies for Southwest and was able to hitch a ride (for free of course :)) this morning to Orlando and drove out to Jetty Park next to Port Canaveral. He said it was excellent! :)

Next one is in February...hopefully his wife can fly down in time to see it for the first time then.

Went to Kennedy Space Center last week but couldn't stay for the launch... Not a big deal since my tickets were free and I had a great time looking at what they had. The Saturn V is really neat to see in person.

I'm still going to try and make it out to see a launch but will just fly out the day prior rather than planning a vacation around the thing.
