Apparently the consensus above agrees this looks awful, but personally I like it. Reminds me of the race cars of the 60s. I have yet to find someone who can tell me why those old race cars had gold wheels... Image Unavailable, Please Login Sent from my VS990 using FerrariChat.com mobile app
Many of those vintage racing wheels were cast magnesium alloy. The gold coloration is the chemical conversion coating to prevent corrosion.
Wow itsablur! I'm so grateful!! I've asked that question to countless folks at concors and car shows, and no one had an answer. Now I'm no longer ignorant ( well, that's still debatable ). Thanks!! Sent from my VS990 using FerrariChat.com mobile app
So, for the rest of you who were as clueless as me, further investigation shows "itsablur" is absolutely correct. The magnesium alloy is "pickled" by dipping in a vat of toxic and carcinogenic chemicals including chromic acid. Someone else said it's hexavalent chromium that's the main ingredient also known as yellow or gold chromate. The original toxic brew was the same stuff used to give other metal parts the classic " gold cadmium " plating although a less toxic mix is used now..The gold chromate treatment inhibits corrosion of the magnesium, but it turns it somewhere between brown and light gold depending on how hot it's mixed. That classic bronze-gold seems to be the most common. It's called a Dow 7 or Type III dichromate treatment. And so ends today's lesson in Historical Chemistry. There will be a quiz tomorrow! I can see where they are going with those gold wheels, the tone could be better though I bet with the right tone it would looks quite nice.

I've seen these Speedlines before. These are from a TR that'll fit the 348. https://www.ebay.com/itm/Wheels-18-inch-Ferrari-Testarossa-512TR-F512M-348-F355-SPEEDLINE/253974577612 Image Unavailable, Please Login
So you walk into a Ferrari showroom and there sits your dream 348 but with gold rims. You buy the car, its absolutely perfect. 1st thing you do is put the rims back to how they are supposed to be.
