My mother in law needs a new car. She currently has Benz A190 Auto but she's unimpressed by the reliability. I've suggested a Golf. (I'd like to see her in a GTi with DSG cos I love the look of them but that is doubtful :) )

Anyone had any experience with the new Golf?

Yes, and I borrowed one when my Lambo was in for service one day. The thing fairly hauled ass. I realised later it had a DSG gearbox - I just thought it was a very responsive auto box.

Yeah, they are not built all that well [Made In S/Africa] and have small bits and pieces needing fixing and software issues. They also dont do that well in consumer feedback reports, NOT a lemon, but nowhere near as good as they should be.Needs PULP fuel too.

THE Mother.In.Law car of all time, is the Corolla, a bulletproof [but boring] vehicle if ever one existed.New model out next month.

In back to back testing in that cat. winner time after time is the Mazda3, be my pick too

Depending on the budget [and the need for prestooge] what about a BMW-1-Series?

cannot go wrong with a corolla end of the day

just depends on her required level of vanity!

    Golf is Good,

however the quality is not as good as it should be.
plastics and materials are fantastic, but little problems like my friend has.

window when winding up then drops back down again
a rattle in the dash that took for ever to find

i know theyre minor things but not what i'd have expected from VW.

GTi would by my top pick for a daily runner of any new car on the market these days.

i also like the Citroen C4, but theyre a bit unproven here in Aus.

I actually also like the Megane sport 225, but theyre not the most popular car in the looks dept so i can imagine resale would be death (as with the citroen as theyre unproven)

GTi ticks the resale box also IMO.

    definately

gone are the days where you either had a manual gearbox, or a woeful 4spd auto in anything less than an exotic

some pretty good auto options out there these days

to cite a relatively crude example even some bloody falcons have a german ZF box in em.

probably the best part of the car!
