I'm watching the Brit Open. On 13, there is a hellacious hole of a sand trap. If a player lands in it, can they take a stroke penalty and drop it out of the bunker if they choose not to play the ball from an impossible lie in the trap?

    "Rule 28 -- Ball Unplayable

    * If your ball is under a tree or in some other bad situation and you decide you cannot play it, add a penalty stroke and do one of the following:

    1. Go back to where you played the last shot and play a ball from there

    2. Measure two club-lengths from the unplayable lie, drop a ball and play from there

    3. Keep the unplayable lie between where you drop the ball and the hole, go back as far as you wish on a straight line and drop and play the ball."

    http://www.pga.com/play/the-rules-of-golf.cfm

    Here's the complete rule:

" The player may deem his ball unplayable at any place on the course except when the ball is in a water hazard. The player is the sole judge as to whether his ball is unplayable.
If the player deems his ball to be unplayable, he must, under penalty of one stroke:
    a. Play a ball as nearly as possible at the spot from which the original ball was last played (see Rule 20-5); or
    b. Drop a ball behind the point where the ball lay, keeping that point directly between the hole and the spot on which the ball is dropped, with no limit to how far behind that point the ball may be dropped; or
    c. Drop a ball within two club-lengths of the spot where the ball lay, but not nearer the hole.
If the unplayable ball is in a bunker, the player may proceed under Clause a, b or c. If he elects to proceed under Clause b or c, a ball must be dropped in the bunker.
The ball may be lifted and cleaned when proceeding under this Rule. "

Although I would guess that the fair play aspect of the game would prohibit one from declaring a difficult lie unplayable, it would have to be wedged into the side of a pot bunker or some such situation to be unplayable. Otherwise, wouldn't you see lots of drops out of those nasty bunkers?

I read thru all 28 rules and I don't see the one about having to wear Madras-Patched pants.

That's the unbearable rule, not the unplayable rule.

HA! I play a fade that you would not believe! My stance is at a 45o left to the target. If ya can't fix it, feature it!

It seems to me, that little section controls. I'm guessing more pros don't take drops because they think the one stroke penalty isn't worth it.
We mortals, on the other hand, might be well advised to just take the drop.

    Get 3 clubs.

Put 1 on the ground, aiming towards the hole
Just get back in the normal stance and line up

Rest club #2 on your leg for a moment.
Stick yer butt out a little - that's per pivot, mister

Get club #3 in your hands, like you're ready to swing.
Grab club #2, put it across front of your shoulders

You'll see your shoulders are way off center - far left of the target

Keep the club up there and get it to where it's pointed straight. DO IT! *Cracks whip*

The moral of the story is:
All this time, you thought you were straight, but you weren't.
