All I can say is don't be cheesy with it. Don't put the ring in a glass of champagne, odds are she'll swallow it then you'll have to wait a few days to put it on her finger.

However you do it congrats. Marriage is a wonderful institution, take it from someone who's been institutionalized for the past 6 years or so.

Do not do it unless you are man enough to not ever get a divorce. Don't lie to yourself by saying "Well always be happy OMG!!!" Ask yourself one question: Are you man enough to live up to the promises you make when you marry? One of those promises is not porking the hot 19 year-old secretary who refuses to wear panties that you'll be issued when you are a wealthy and powerful 45 year-old executive with a slowly fattening wife at home that you've lost interest in banging after 25 years of the same dish.

Marriage is a social contract, one that the current generation (and the baby boomers) seem to think is merely a sign of "seriously dating." If you are not absolutely certain that you can go the long haul, don't get married. The institution is in enough trouble as it is.

Who cares what he is, or was, or will be.

you're a freakin' used card salesman. So what...

I make big pieces of cardboard into littler ones. BFD.

He's in love, wants to get married. This isn't about talking him out of it, it's about how to do the propsal.

Take her to a restaurant near a good jeweler. Feed her get her a liitle loopy with some nice wine, and pop the question.

DO NOT pick the ring out without her. Give her an IOU for the ring at dinner, and take her that evening to the ring store. Let her pick. LET HER PICK. Steer her towards rings you can AFFORD. Then buy one that costs more than that.

Most importantly, enjoy the experience as best you can. Try not to make the ring be about the cost but about it being a sign of your commitment to her.
