A friend of mine and I are headed out for a long-ish drive today. He's got a Tesla, I've got the 355. If you haven't driven a Tesla, they are really fun and super easy to drive. This is gonna be a blast.

No shifting + no noise = no fun.

Ten bucks says his batteries go flat trying to keep up.

OK, so I'm pretty damn tired. It is a drive and a half, we took a different route than originally planned. Because . . . . Tesla problems!

After we went through Highland Valley Rd. and then into Ramona, it started to overheat. He said that it had done that one other time he had pushed the car. So from Ramona, I drove with him shotgun up and around Mt. Palomar. See attached route.

That drive around Mt. Palomar is difficult. Lots of turns and a decent amount of shifting between 2,3,4. I was driving on what I would call a pretty good edge. Tires were talking through most of the turns and we didn't hit a bit of traffic. It was damn hot out there.

Stopped for a late breakfast at the top of the mount at Mother's Kitchen. Good food, but it is vegetarian and the girl didn't really appreciate that I asked for bacon with my omlette. Some poor sap in a Miata blew his engine right before our eyes in the parking lot.

Came down the Mt. Palomar and just more of the same; lots of twists and turns. I backed off quite a bit on the way down as I was a little punchy from concentrating for such a long stretch and my hangover wasn't helping either.

We picked up the Tesla in Ramona and headed back down to San Diego. Sucks that the Tesla didn't get to have as much fun as my F355.

Car ran great, incredibly so, and passed me over 1000 miles since I've owned it. Very proud of the machine right now. Sorry for no pics, there wasn't much time to look around. In any case, if you push yourself, this drive will put you in the hurt locker. Very long and never a straight miles of road (except for the way there and home of course).

    Hope everyone's Sunday was fun.

That's a great route. So was your alternate route up Mt. Palomar. We really are fortunate in SD county to have some fantastic roads out East that don't get too congested. Glad you had a great time, lolz at the Tesla!

I used to love that drive up through Cuyamaca into Julian back in the 80's in a Firebird or on my 900F Honda. Always stopped at a bread company up there near a Bison farm. The name escapes me. Always came back the way I came and still loved it although that Ramona route looks pretty sweet. Ahh...those were the days.

    Called it. :D

Good story. Kinda too bad about the Tesla. I was really into it a couple years ago, following the development, etc. I think it's been a colossal disappointment. Tiny, cramped and no good driving hard (see above and Top Gear review). What purpose does it have except to advance the technology and give people the illusion they are saving the planet (but what happens to all of those batteries in a few years??)

    Rick,

The Tesla is a damn cool 'car' But 100k cool it is not. I drove it a few weeks ago and the acceleration from 0-60 is crazy. It starts to fall off a bit after that. This overheating episode is not normal, but it was funny that it happened. I'm just glad my 355 did so well. It was filthy afterward however and I must have taken about 20 tiny crickets out of my front grill and fog lights afterwards.

If you have time Chris, put this story on your blog. I'd love to link to it on my FB page - I think folks outside of Fchat would like to read about this little adventure.
