Today at the grocery store I saw a beer that caught my eye, so I decided to try it- it was Lawson Creek Honey Wheat which is brewed in Cold Spring, MN. I thought it would be a wheat beer, but it didnt have the cloudy look of a wheat beer. It does, however, have a sweet taste. I've found some pretty decent American beers out west, namely Fat Tire from CO and Shiner Bock from TX. This is refreshing because I used to think almost no good beers came from this country (this holds true for large breweries- except Sam Adams Summer Ale). From the northeast, my favorites are Saranac, Magic Hat, and rally cap. What other good regional American Beers are out there?

Budweiser, that's brewed under license in Czech Republic. Anything else is Donkey pee except for the boutique manufacturers.

Anyone remember Rattlesnake beer from Louisiana?? Not made anymore:( However, probably the most inconsistently made beer in history..when a batch was good, there was nothing better, when bad...well, "bad" does simply can't describe the "taste". At over $40/case back in 1991, buying it was always an investment gamble.

Sam Adams lager is really hoppy, I think it is the best of the macros (big brewers).

Some US breweries that I've found who usually have a good, consistent lineup of beers:

    - Anderson Valley (CA)
    - Rogue (OR) (incredible variety)
    - Magic Hat (VT)
    - Dogfishhead (DE)
    - Hair of the Dog (OR)
    - Anchor (CA)
    - Cellis (TX)
    - Brooklyn Brewery (NY)
    - Sierra Nevada (CA)

There are some others I'm sure, but that's just off the top of my head. I'm sure there are regional brewers that offer some good stuff, but most of the ones I've listed can usually be found nationwide. The biggest gripe I have with most American brewers (micro-brewers in particular) is that they go apecrap with the hops (Sam Adams is a good example of that mess; although their Triple Bock is good). What they end up with is a bottle of ultra-bitter swill that has no discernable character whatsoever other than to assault your taste buds with hops. What fun is that? Oh well, maybe they'll figure it out someday...

RussianM3_dude: they actually now sell the REAL Budweiser Budvar here in the US now, but I think it's under the Czchvar name (if memory serves me correct Anheiser Busch wouldn't allow them to sell it in the US under it's real name even though it's been around for hundreds of years, go figure). It's WAYYYYYYYY better than the "Budweiser" from Anheiser Busch IMHO. :)

Budvar (marketed as Czechvar in the US as johnny bravo said) is my least favorite Czech beer. I prefer Staropramen or Krusovice, but would settle for Gambrinus if available. Pilsner Urquell is a little better than Budvar, but the bottles dont taste as fresh as the stuff on tap in the czech republic. The pilsner urquell is a little more bitter than the other Czech beers I mentioned, which i dont prefer. The best, and smoothest beer I ever tasted was Zywiec in Poland. I never thought I'd say this, but I think it's better than Czech beers.
Since we are talking about imported beers now, I should mention this great wheat beer called Franziskahner. Its delicious.

TPK- I agree, I like Yuengling too. Its everywhere in NY. The people who own the company actually live in my area. Anyway, it definately is one of the best common beers in this country, and its cheaper than that bud/coors garbage.

vraa- no, this thread is not a joke. Good American beers DO exist.

If your in the Midwest...Bell's Brewary A.K.A Kalamazoo Brewing Company. Their best beer is oberon, which is there summer brew.

I also like Shiner Bock...since moving here to TX. Fat Tire is a good one that I really like and Blue Moon is a really tasty brew as well.

No doubt about that! I only know of maybe 5 bars that DON'T carry it here. It is everywhere, and it is delicious.

The popularity is catching on pretty quickly in neighboring states, so hopefully some of you guys can get a taste of what New Orleanian beer drinkers drink(if you can't trust New Orleans to find the best beer then you can't trust anyone).

    My favorites are:
    Abita Amber
    Abita Purple Haze
Abita Fall Fest(seasonal and my favorite, best with raw oysters)

I like Pilsner too, but it's NOT an American beer. Czech Bud is the closest to good American beer. For the sake of fairness, Canadian beer is mostly awfull too. Note of course there are great boutique American and Canadian beers, but mass-produced? Meh...

You cannot beat most beers from Oregon. But I have a couple favorites,
    Full Sail Gold Imperial Ale
DogFishHead has a crazy assortment of flavors - $100 a Six pack
Rouge there Amber Ale is a great another oregon beer.
I know it sounds silly but Fat Tire from New Belgium Brewing out of california is one I am always reaching for at the store, but never out though, just a great tasting bottled beer.

So many great breweries and brewers out there, Sam Adams has some new one called Utopia thats suppose to blow your mind. I am trying to get my hands on it now.
Great thread, I could discuss beer for hours, since i am not a big wine drinker, i just feel i am too young to be into the wine.

Im pretty sure it is, but Im not sure exactly where in the state its from. There is a great wine cellar(Martin's) here that has a deli. If I get in the mood this afternoon to grab one of their sandwiches I'll try to meander over to their beer section and take a look.

Anchor Steam out of San Francisco is a pretty good beer. They have their Liberty Ale, and standard "Steam Beer", which I really like. They also do seasonal beers, with a nice winter warmer. The US is on a roll right now with good beers--lots of good micros and near macros producing stuff as good as anywhere in the world. No reason to drink that Bud or Miller swill anymore!

There are some American beers that are okay. The best tasting American beer is definantly from a microbrewery. Here in So Cali, BJ's Bar and grill makes some nice stuff, as does the Santa Barbara Brewing Co. The mass produced stuff is CRAP.

Yup, every restuarant we went to was serving, I only got to taste it at the hotel room and now at my house (we picked some up before we even got back to our house on the way back from the airport)
Its a good thing they dont serve to minors because I probably would have had my weight in that beer everynight ;)

Which places were you going to?!

I would guess that literally 50-65% of the alcohol vendors lining Bourbon St. do not card. You got hosed!
