Greetings Soon, I'll be free to move pretty much anywhere I want. Right now i'm thinking South Carolina, Georgia or Florida -- anywhere near the water. I'm curious about living conditions, housing prices, employment opportunities, etc. I have found the Visitor/C of C sites, but want something a little less touristy. A few links would be great. Thanks T
ahem NC ahem....... sorry had to clear my throat hahaha What cities are you thinking about? Charleston is a good city on the ocean in SC. It also depends what kind of population you want ie size. Columbia is nice an central to many things and Lake murray is right there.
Just glancing at a map, Charleston looks good to me. I'd like near a city, something that's going to have a high-tech infrastructure (I'm in IT for now), but that isn't huge or really crowded
Look one state north, if you want IT. Raleigh/Durham/Chapel Hill (The Triangle) is the place to be. Charlotte also has pretty heavy duty IT opportunities because of all the bank headquarters. At the rate we're going at Ricambi, I might be needing some IT professionals too! (But I could use a bartender first)
Y'all get snow in NC, correct? That's the part that bothers me. I am not a guy who handles cold well. I'm not a bartender but I could learn Thanks for the tips, I'm a bit surprised SC is light in the tech world
The triad area is very well know for Technology. As long as you aren't in the mountains of Western NC you'll get about the same amount of snow in NC as SC. Charlotte would be one of the warmer cities around besides wilmington of course. Most cities in NC get more ice than snow honestly. I've honestly not heard of many Tech companies in SC it is mainly just manufacturing. Of course I live in NC so maybe I haven't heard about it.
charleston has the worst roads i've seen i think. greenville is alright, not much to do unless you are over 21, or know the right people. columbia is good like someone said it's central to things. we didn't get any snow at all this year.
I might be relocating to South Carolina in a few months myself (Florence SC that is). Dunno if it will happen but it could happen from the way things are going for me. Anyways I would actually suggest the Savannah GA area. Great place and they throw a hell of a St Patricks day party down by the River.
That is very very true, but only downtown. Plus I doubt you'd really wanna live down town. There are several upscale areas close enough. Aiken???? are you sure about that? They do have a redlight in that town right? haha JK
Charleston is great. I live in Summerville, 20 miles NW. Great place to live. College of Charleston is 85% FEMALE...OOPS! Was that out loud? Nice beaches, great dining, consistantly in the top 10 places to live according to some magazine people have told me about.
All I have to say is Hilton Head Island. The most relaxing place i've ever been to. Closest city is Savannah, GA...a really cool mid-size city but i'm not too sure about the technology field in the area. If not Charleston gets my 2nd vote.
Hilton Head? Relaxing? You must have a chauffeur. I've never been anywhere more maddening. Two hours of traffic to get from one end of a three-mile long island to the other. Every blue-hair in the country that fails their driving exam gets send to Hilton Head Island for remedial puttering. No signs taller than 24", ensuring you will never locate any merchant except by accident. Yikes! Charleston, while posessed of a few infrastructure issues, is otherwise great. Good info here: www.charlestoncvb.com Come on down! Happy to give you more info if you need it. -- charles
Hahahha....you do make a valid point. But once you get onto the island....Hilton Head is extremely relaxing. Plus there are back roads that can get you in....we've learned them after going for the past few years.
I just got back (last night) from my first trip to the area, I too are possibly condidering a move there (again) I was REALLY impressed with Charleston, I had to drive back and forth across Mt. Pleasant daily. ( I was attending a class) the Daniel Island area looked GREAT !! How is Mt. pleasant? My wife is looking for a typical suburb area, GREAT mall, restaurant, LOW crime ? Not meaning to hyjack Tillman but sounds like we are looking for the same answers. I also spent a 2 days in Hilton Head (one night on Defuski Island) and I was REALLY disappointed in the place, I was hopeing for more beachy feel, we were dreadful bored. Spent one day in Savannah, river street was cool if you like touristy shops and bars, street were nice but seemed way to ghetto-ish if you ventured out of a 4 four block area. and is there anything on the road to Columbia, I don't think there's even a gas station just a bunch of pine trees ! and DON"T drive 17 from Beauford to Charleston, I thought that road would never end !! heheheh.
We lived on Daniel Island for about a year. Looks inviting but my wife hated it. Too much "stepfordwives" for her. If your kids leave a bike at the curb overnight you'll get an anonymous letter in the mailbox and so on. It seems that a lot of people that live there don't have to work and that can make for some strange neighbors. Karl
It is a little creepy isn't it? A little to pre-planned and artificial. But, I go to the soccer stadium every chance I get!
Daniel Island -- Pleasantville, Stepford Wifes, The Trueman Show, 1984 in color.... you get it. Mt. Pleasant for safety, malls, schools, etc. Downtown for shopping, frequent socializing, historic properties, and hot college chicks... We like James Island, West Ashley, Summerville, Johns Island. If I wanted to retire and had a lot of cash, I would live at Kiawah -- but Kiawah is only for golfers.
