Ken Okuyama, who worked at Pininfarina from 1995 until 2000 and is credited with the design of Ferrari models such as the Enzo Ferrari and the 612 Scaglietti as well as the Ferrari Rossa, will be returning to Pininfarina as creative director soon after serving four years as the Art Center College of Designs transportation design chairman. Before his first stint at Pininfarina he worked at General Motors and Porsche.

Who should be styling for ferrari?
What ever happened to the Body lines that made ferraris Erotic exotic?
is there anything wrong with the design direction at ferrari?
Does Lamborghini have a better design Direction?
Do you consider the 360 and the maranello as symbollic as the dino and Daytona?

    Opinions? anyone!

I think Ferrari is slacking. Their new designs are pretty un-Ferrarish. They look like Asian concept cars. They need to go back to the nice smooth lines and designs that will last forever and be evolved easily and keep the styling(ie the 308-->328, 550-->575). Not just a whole new car that smiles at you and cant outrun a Corvette. And speaking of outrunning Corvettes, I though exotics were all about style and grace, while being fast at the same time, and being able to outrun a Corvette.

That's bad news as far as I'm concerned. Granted, I'm not the target audience, but the Enzo and the 612 were underwhelming.

Agree with above, but didn't he design the 360, too (which is breath-taking)?

The Enzo makes the lines of the Lambo look... all-most tame.
Ferrari just needs more Enzo and less 612Scag in their new cars

I get just the opposite feeling, the Murci blows the Enzo away -- looks wise.

Ferrari needs more F355; 365 GTB; 250 GTO styling than 360 or Enzo styling.

    I think so too.
However that time has past. Keep evoloutionizing.
Lambos styling direction is harsh lines, and making their cars look almost the same. I think the Lambo is too "basic" looking for me. However I do think that you can without thinking, take styling too far.
Ferrari should be carefull of that.

Okuyama, Pissses me off. His designs are crap. The Enzo is nasty, the 612 is boring, the Rossa was a disappointment

I say bring in Fioravanti who designed the 308. He knows what a Ferrari should look like. Send Okuyama to Nissan

Agreed... Gone are the days when a view of the latest Ferrari made your heart race because of its line and passion. It's time for a change before you can't tell the difference between a Ferrari and A Toyota from across the street

I am a design student. I like his work. His designs are progressive and forward thinking; you all will come to accept them in a year or two and realize that they are the future of the company.

Relying on old material (like the lines of the 388) is a weak thing for the company to do. I love cars like the 288, but comedians don't make money telling old jokes...if you know what I'm saying.

More importantly, Based on current "trends" it won't be until the next model cycle that companies such as Porsche, Ferrari, Lamborghini, etc. start to incorporate retro concepts into their cars (ie 997 Porsche or a new Dino)

If you guys want redesigned retro cars, I suggest checking out the new Ford Rustang, it's right up your alley!

I also think that the longer you look at the new designs the more they grow on you. The old cars look old not modern. Granted they are beautiful. They are classics just old classics. The wind tunnel is the future. The GTO is my favorite and its georgeous, timlesss but it looks like a old car. I was surprised at the Breakers when the cars I also love looked old. Also the new designs are easy to drive.

Maybe its not so much as the designers faults as per the direction from upper management, Luca.Ferrari is going after a different customer now and different direction, the cars are less like art and more functional.

Part of which made the older cars exiting to people was all the detail that went into the cars, small vents, scoops, cuts, accents, hidden mesh etc. you could look at them for hours and find new details and everything had such symmetry and flowed. New designs are plain in comparison.

I also studied design. the 550/575 is a retro Daytona, the 360 is a retro 250LM, The Murcielago is a retro Countach & the 911 is evolutionary as always. The Enzo was groundbreaking in a nasty way, I'd rather have an F40 anyday

I have to aggree that the newer cars leave me a little cold. I prefer the looks of the 355 and older cars. But I would take any of them if they were free. :)

I couldn't agree more with this.

IMO, with the Enzo, Ferrari decided that beauty no longer was needed in their designs.

    Hi there,

I think it was a massive success how Aston Martin went retro towards the 60s styles but with a modern look that is so cool, stylish with panache and aggressive curves and scoops and cut outs. They completely obliterated the lates 70s/80s type stylying. Ferrari are trying to go to a modern styling without that much reference to the older stuff and it just doesnt work. After all much of the appreciation of a marque is a reflection of its past history.

They could blow the competition away if they got the same aston stylists who redid the 60s looks and said "ok mate do the same with ferarri".

I think the Enzo looks fine but the 612 is lame. The 360 is beautiful, lets remember with Frank Stephenson at Ferrari no we should probably see some more graceful cars. But I agree bring back Leonardo F. he knew how to design.

At least bring back an Italian designer. No offense to anybody but there are distinctive differences between Japanese and Italian styling cues. The other part is the wind tunnel influence. Can't it just be used as a tool?

Pardon me, but no they aren't. When I say retro, I mean retro-look, or direct styling interpretations from older cars (ie new Mustang). The 575M does not share styling in any way with a Daytona; nor does the 360 share with the 250, etc. The only similarities between any of the cars you listed (small exception in Porsche's case) are their position within Ferrari's model range.

This goes the same for the Countach, and for the most part the 911 -- only the new 997 is a retro interpretation as it features paneling and lights similar to the 993, which is more than a generation old.

According to the Merriam-Webster dictionary, "retro" means: relating to, reviving, or being the styles and especially the fashions of the past.

The 575M is not a retro-look car. The Murcielago is not a retro-look car. The 360 is not a retro-look car.

Personally, i feel the Testarossa series was the final design Ferrari made that was the perfect combination of looks and performance. The F50 is great, but Ferrari should have put out something along the lines of the Maserati MC12 instead of the Enzo. That car, i feel, is what stunning design is all about.

As for Lambo, the Murci doesnt seem like the countach at all! The Gallardo has more styling cues towards the countach than any other model. Lambo has always been about shocking looks though. The current Ferraris look great...just not... spellbinding.

On the otherhand...when you drive the car you cant really see what it looks like. And as always, they dont seem to be dissapointing in that area.
