GOOD POINTS TO CONSIDER WHEN FUELING YOUR CAR

Below are practices I’ve found to make sense and are useful

    1) Try to keep you tank at least half full (especially if you live in a hot climate), so fill it once half empty and you will not lose fuel through vapor loss

    2) Tank up early in the morning (or in the evening) when it is cooler. It is easier to top off your tank if fumes are not escaping during the process

    3) Make sure the service station you choose is not having its underground tank(s) refilled as the tanker truck’s refueling will stir up sediment In the buried tanks

    4) If you are low and need gas, but no 93 octane is available, just pump about 3-5 gals of 89 octane so you can tank up further down the road to top off the tank with 93 octane

    5) Pump the fuel yourself and refrain from using the automatic flow mechanism; poorly maintained pumps can overfill and fuel will spill onto your paint (and you)

    6) Stay with the car and keep control of your key(s); keep your back to the pump so you can see who might come up on you (act accordingly).

    7) Don’t forget to put on the gas cap!

    8) ENJOY THE DRIVE

IMPORTANT TO THOSE WITH CARBURETTED MODELS: The above is especially true in that there is less chance of vapor-locking and or fire. I like to do my drives early in the day when the weather is usually more accommodating for both driver and car.

Feel free to add tips to share with other!

    Point to add:

If smoking a cigarette, be sure to hold it in the opposite hand from the one you’re using to pump the gas. Way safer that way.

This is really great advice, and will save lives for sure. I always wondered why gas stations have signs all over that say no smoking.

Good points, although I usually go down to a quarter tank before refilling (I hate stopping for gas).

I never thought about point 3, it makes sense the tank refilling will stir up sediment. Although I think all pumps have filters, but who knows when they changed them.

I don't like to top off my tank, so I do use the automatic shutoff. It stops the refueling well before the tank is topped off.

My car starts sending our low fuel warning once I get past 1/2 tank, but 1/4 tank is fine for most people. I try to keep my tank at full or close to it...I've got too close to running out and having to sweat the last few miles...Take care!

I’d prefer smoking be encouraged for those dumb enough to not understand why it’s a bad idea. As long as the pyre doesn’t impact bystanders what’s the harm.

Once more to add... Don't top off or overfill your tank. If you have a Ferrari with a charcoal canister you could ruin it. Ask me how I know and I'll give you over 2000 reasons why it could be a problem.

And let’s all take a photo of the simple yet magnificent experience of having such a machine!

I don’t know the reason, but I like to stand and stare after I’m done at the fuel pump; I can’t imagine others with their cars do/doing the same.

My gas stations get competitive. Also, for anyone with a 458 and capless filler problems, I highly recommend https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07L35KRF2/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1.

    I thank you, John!

I can’t honestly speak for others’ experiences with newer Fcars.

I normally receive great feedback once people hear she’s 45-years old, and that I do my best to maintain her…carb’ rebuilds, fuel hoses, wires, plugs, ignition coil and, most recently, a new gearbox oil pan gasket to finally correct a nasty leak.

I’m always happy to talk with anyone who’s curious; I hope to give a positive experience about that dude with the vintage Ferrari!

Side note to try and maintain a little consistency with the thread. The 93-octane Techron with Seafoam has made a noticeable improvement.

You're doing the right thing by not letting things slide
Good info to pass on. So, how long have you owned your car? I have a 1980 that I bought in '85 and decided to keep her rather than go hi-tech...It cost a bunch to bring her back, but still less than buying a new or near-new replacement...

Hoping I’m not hijacking the thread…I bought my 308 in June 2019 so your story with your 308 far exceeds mine! I bought my first, an absolutely beautiful ‘77 GTB, in 2002 when they were far more affordable…$25,000!! A less than nominal photo of her is attached; such was cell photo capability then…

I’ve read your posts about all you’ve had done to your GTB…Absolutely awesome…My sincere compliments to you for staying vintage and true to this/your life story.

    Cheers!! Enjoy every mile.

Everything's good...We have 308s and the fact they're coupes is icing on the cake. Keep enjoying it as they are getting rarer all the time.
