It's a blue on blue five speed, looks nice, owner claims to be ferrari mechanic and has done work to the car.
    What is a fair price?

Well, that's a hard one. The color and gearbox seem favorable. Assuming the engine and gearboix are sound (mechanic's cars can have compression and synchro problems just like anyone else's). I'd say the best 412 is 40 (more like 39) on it's best day. The worst (in need of mechanical attention, ratty cosmetics and few or no records) would be low to mid 20s, assuming it's functional. If this car's cosmetics are perfect (unstated in your post) and it has its tools, books and records, I say 35 would be fair. 33 would be a deal. With 21 k miles and all things thumbs up (great mechanics, cosmetics and records, I'd say 39).

Yep, I'm pretty close to being with Davidindallas.

    Nice 412 5 speed = $39k to $44k.

...and hey! Where did you hear about this car? I only know of 1 412 for sale in the US and I thought I was "tuned in".

A lot of people claim to be Ferrari mechanics. But unless the person can post some real credentials, beware. Thread on recommended Ferrari mechanics in the general discussion section. If any are close to your location I would advise to get in touch with them.

There's a blue on blue 86 412 in California, with a 5 speed, in the FCA Bulletin right now for $39k.

Speedo's in kilos, if I recall correctly.

Without looking at my FNB, that is most certainly 63321, which was profiled in Forza #29. Since then it has changed hands a couple of times and has been for sale for at least two years, mostly with prices in the mid-high 40's. The article seemed to indicate that it is a very good, well maintained car and apparently had new tires and exhaust in the last few years.

Seems like a reasonable car if the seller gets realistic on the price.

Yep, it sure is 63321, currently located in So Cal, with 50k kilos. The guy wants $39,900 or offer, but will consider a 77-79 308 GTB/S as partial trade.

Here's an unusual email I got from the owner of this 412, a guy who has never posted on F Chat before named Phil T.

Don't know why he's singling me out for his rant. Did anyone else get a letter from this nut?

I certainly wasn't critical of his car, just stating some facts for a potential purchaser who was looking for info on that particular car:

<<Hello, I'd like to respond to some of the comments about my 412, but I am not
sure how to post a proper response to people that like talking about Ferraris
(and not much else). It is mentioned that the tires and mufflers are new, they
are but there is much more than that. The suspension and shocks have been
rebuilt, the hydraulic accumulators are new, as are the brakes, and the dash
leather and other items. There are no more repairs looming in the dark. The
car runs and drives flawlessly, like all the Ferraris I have owned.

I have been a mechanic for 38 years, 32 years on (my) Ferraris. I have worked
professionally as a mechanic for 10 years when I was younger, but transitioned
to Electrical Engineering when I finished school. I have built/rebuilt 100 or
so cars, but only about 8 Ferraris. Early Ferraris are remarkably simple. I
still enjoy building cars, but one at a time now, for myself only.

The car is as good as they get, but I keep getting clowns that want the car for
$35K. Let them find one for $35K and watch them spend $8k to $12k on repairs
and deferred maintanance issues common with these cars. I will keep the car
until someone steps up to the plate. I can enjoy the car for the next ten years
    without any work needed.

It's like the looky loo who will NEVER own a Ferrari, but will tell you why they
don't like a particular car, and spend hours in cyberspace venting their limited
knowledge about Ferraris ( and anything else ). My advise to them is to, Sell
their prized collection of dungeons and dragons action figures, save up some
money and go out and buy a Ferrari ( and brush their teeth and do that giant
load of old laundry piled up in the corner ). pt>>
