Installing a stereo, IR repeater, radar detector, etc, in my 348 so I need a good switched +12 volt source. The previous installer tapped into a wire coming off of the key switch but I'd rather use a source that doesn't add load to the ignition switch itself. Has anyone here already located a convenient under-dash supply that's switched through a relay?

I ran a dedicated line off the battery with a relay to switch it on off from the ignition to run my extra guages and usb socket
Did not see anything worth while on the car to use.

Thanks, Tim. I do have a separate unswitched +12 V cable from the battery so that's an option, although I doubt the load I'm trying to carry is much bigger than the coil in a relay so it might be a wash. Guess I need to check the draw of the various devices. How are you actuating the relay?

Mike, rip the radio out (see the other thread) then you will have a permanent and ign. switched 12V from the radio connector.

I use that 12 volt ignition on wire I found under the dask. I forget what it was for maybe radio or wipers. I took it right off the fuse box under the bonnet .
It is only used to trigger a relay to power on 12 volt with the key on

Then the starter you use the solenoid start wire to trigger it like he posted in his pics

I been using electronic relays lately and delay relays to control stuff, example I have my cooling fan run 30 seconds after I turn off the car

    EDIT

    I use these

    :)

Thanks, Tim! After the original post it dawned on me that the draw from the head unit is probably a good deal more than my original estimate, even though I'm using an external amp. So I'm just going to follow your suggestion and install a separate relay for those items.

I'm interested in the timer delay relays. Got a link?

    Thanks again.

Ah, but that would defeat much of the purpose. While I love the sound of a great engine, I also love music, so the more I like a car the more I want to be able to enjoy my music collection in it. I even listen to music on the track, or at least try to-- the exhaust system in the ///M3 overpowers the current audio system. Hence the desire to upgrade the sound system in the 348-- it's gotta be able to stand up against a Tubi & test pipes. :)

In any case, there doesn't seem to be a switched +12 source in the original stereo harness. :(

Are you sure? My 348 radio connector block has one, otherwise the radio would not go on and off with the ignition. Otherwise, the (fairly) standard wire colours of the radio are yellow for permanent 12V, red for ign. 12V.

If I remember correct my 348 radio harness only has a 12v constant and no switched also

I have to correct myself, my block does not have it either. I had to wire it separately (see the red wire on the pic).

I remember it had a red wire that did nothing, perhaps a switching wire from the radio that kept memory or something. These cars have odd wiring at best :)

Not that I know anything about the 348, but I agree, running a wire from the battery and using a relay to any of the switched 12v wires should be fine. Relays don't draw much power, so the radio switched 12 volt would be a natural choice for a relay. Also the fuel pump relay is a good place to pick up 12v for switching on the relay.

LOL those fuel pump relays take a beating from the fuel pumps and bad connections. It was one of the things my black challenge has issues with. The connections were toast at the relay board

Well, I would argue that it might make a good early warning system rather than having undetected faults in the fuel system. LOL, if your relays to the fuel system are screwed up, you would want to know it!

    Thought about it

Way the system works if I remember right BIG IF, lol
Crank trigger see 35 rpm then flips on the fuel pump relays. If the pumps are drawing too many amps connections start to go then the connections fail then pumps fail

Best thing would be to record the fuel pump amp pull but now were just getting silly LOL
We need to stop thinking you and me because we may come up with a car thats way overkill

    Wait that ain't ain't so bad :)

Anyway the fuel pump is the root of all evil :)

Why not go to passenger footwell? Plenty of power there plus close to where you will work.
