Gooding London 3rd September 2022

Gooding returns to London after their inaugural London sales in 2021 which were occasionally successful and the 2020 sale of the Fabri collection. Gooding are now sponsors of the Concours d'Elegance at Hampton Court Palace, easily the UKs finest concours and so this sale takes place as part of the festivities. Highlights are the Bugatti Type 55, Ferrari 250GT Short Wheelbase, Rolls-Royce Silver Ghost and a collection of WO Bentleys.

Gooding did very well to shift 25 million UKP/ $29 mm USD worth of cars. Several sales stand out with the 250GT SWB probably the most important, blowing through its high estimate to sell very well. Several Fchatters have noticed that for a decade from 2005 these were basically unavailable despite a high number of approx. 167 being made, just a couple of auction sales during this time not withstanding. The sale of 1995GT for 11 mm at H & H for a British charity in 2015 made many owners take note and over the following two years there were at least 10 offered at auction with reserves over $10 mm and very few sold. Eventually reserves began to drop as dozens of SWBs reached the market with peak SWB hitting Retromobile 2018 where Lukas Huni showed ten - twelve of them, all quietly for sale. Since then sales have been around the $7 - 8 mm mark if at all. So $8.934 mm for Goodings 250SWB with a replacement engine is not bad at all, in fact I would call it very very good.

Elsewhere the 550RS/ 718RSK special sold very well considering it needs a frightfully expensive restoration. The 300SL, Bentleys (some requiring post block deals) and Alfa Romeo TZ all sold very, very well. Only the Bugatti Type 55 sold softly, recent sales suggesting closer to $5 mm makes the $3.3 mm seem cheap as chips!
