A bright-yellow Ferrari convertible was the top-selling collector car during Arizona auction week, and newcomer Gooding & Company was the auction that sold it.

It took $3.3 million to buy the 1959 Ferrari 250 GT long-wheelbase California Spider, a V-12-powered masterpiece with an elegant body style that heralded the look of future sports cars.

Million-dollar collector cars hit the auction blocks across the northeast Valley on Friday and Saturday, with more than a dozen cars breaking into seven figures. advertisement

Exotic sports cars and classic pre-World-War II automobiles scored the top sales, with five Ferraris hitting the heights.

All three Duesenbergs offered this weekend - one each at Gooding, Barrett-Jackson Collector Car Event and RM Automobiles in Arizona - sold for at least $1 million. The top Duesenberg sale was at RM for a 1929 Model J Dual Cowl Phaeton at $1.76 million.

"The classics are stronger than ever," said Ian Kelleher, managing director of RM Auctions.

Gooding had the highest number of seven-figure collector cars, with a total of seven, following by Canadian auction house RM, which sold six. Barrett-Jackson had three.

Besides the Ferrari California Spider, Gooding's top sales were:

    • 1932 Alfa Romeo 6C 1750 Gran Sport Spider, $1,540,000.

    • 1971 Ferrari 365 GTS/4 Daytona Spider, $1,419,000.

    • 1963 Ferrari 400 Superamerica Coupe, $1,320,000.

    • 1932 Packard Model 904 Individual Custom Eight Convertible Victoria, $1,210,000.

    • 1967 Ferrari 275 GTB/4, $1,155,000.

    • 1936 Model J Duesenberg "Clear-Vision" Sedan, $1,100,000.

It would be great if they televised these instead of the BJ muscle fest.
