Is Trillian worth it when you get it all configured? I was messing with it at the office today, but did not get far. I am kind of computer challenged.

Goggle. I thought everyone paying around $70 bucks a share was crazy when they went public. Stupid me, then again, with the crazy amount of Mobil stock I have, the more fuel I use, the more I make :).

Im downloading the program thanks to a few invites (thanks C and Anthony) but its downloading at a snail pace...

Anyone else experiencing this? Im thinking the download server must be lagged up because of all the new users....

I think so... I've been using Trillian for over 4 years now, 3 of those years have been spent as a paying customer.

If you only use one instant messenger, then it may not be worth the $25 for the pro version, unless you really like the idea that you can get a lot of extra functionality with the plugin system. Both Pro and Basic have Skin support, and now with the new unification of most major components between the two versions, skinners, as far as I know, don't have to make two versions of their skins anymore.

    I don't have a mic.

LOL Dan, they are big brother++.

I love trillian, I don't have tabbed windows though thanks to the ultra minimalistic skin I have.

Yes, because although google's apps run on an OS, they will make it obsolete.

Not obsolete, per se, just less relevant.

People used to use the computer primarily to use applications ON the computer. Microsoft not only provided the platform, but also the applications.

Nowadays, people tend to use the computer primarily to go online. Google wants to be the ONLINE application provider.

Sure, we all need an OS to get online, but eventually, who's going to really care how they get online as long as they do get online? They'll never take away from MS's market share on the desktop, but online, Google is king. And someday, that's all that will really matter.

Good point, but with Microsofts massive strong hold, I don't think Google will stay king for too long.

However, it is kinda cool to see where they are going. People used to say Google is the new Altavista, but Altavista didn't do this much. Are they the new Yahoo? But Google never went into Portals...

Wow, I'm actually worried that Microsoft's next OS is going to force the user to use its' components.

They don't need to be a portal when they own all the applications. ;)

Also, don't limit your thinking strictly to the PC. There's a lot of embedded devices that are going to be/already are going out to the internet on their own. Very little penetration by Microsoft in this arena (sans Windows Ce). Google on the other hand... imagine you need to look up a word or topic in a public place or meeting - you'll be able to simply "google it" on your cell phone (if you can't already!). The future isn't necessarily in PCs... with the proliferation of internet enabled devices, Google and its suite of apps are places Microsoft can't even dream of "going today."

    You think so?
I wasn't trying to limit it to PC's. I mean, if you start talking about server end, doesn't Microsoft pretty much have it locked, especially with Sun faltering..?

Now that Google is publicly traded they will try and dominate the web as much as possible. Thats the problem with companies who become public. Its all about the shares not about doing what you do best. Expand, acquire & dominate or the share price will stagnate or fall, & we can't have that, can we BOARD? I'm sick of good companies who go public & don't belong there.

    I wasn't even thinking server-end.

I was thinking more embedded devices and consumer oriented products.

If that were the case then dummy terminals and the Network PC concept owuld have flown. Instead it has failed every time, under myriad circumstances.

Different scenario. Yes, they have failed; yes, there are a lot of reasons for that. However, computer use and technology in general has progressed significantly since the days of the dummy terminals/network PCs.

All sorts of devices nowadays have built in computers. Are you saying that cell phones are going to go the way of the dummy terminal? Are the computerized devices of today really going to regress? Does it really matter if you're using Linux or Microsoft or a random embedded OS anymore?
