after driving for a bit noticed a grating sound at about 4000 rpm, particularly obvious in 1st and 3rd gears. Sounds like the shhhh shhhh of rotating metal on metal, and arises then dissapears as you move through 4000 rpm.

Mechanic has had the car back now for 2 weeks and is having touble IDing the issue so I'm submitting the available info to this august group in hopes of some leads.

He says it appears for him in neutral, 1st, 2nd and 3rd gears, at the noted 4000 rpms only. Occurs with the gate removed. He thinks the appearance of the sound at the shifter is harmonic, but he's not sure. Motor mounts are OK. He changed the gear oil out but this had no effect.

I've seen some similar symptoms on a search but nothing quite described as what I experienced. Any ideas?

Around 4000 the 308 motor vibrates a bit and all kinds of things can make noise. The A/C hoses going over the fuel tank is a common one after a major but it is clear it comes from the R/R corner of the cabin. You might have a look at the big coolant pipe and be sure it isn't rubbing the alt pulley. Also be sure all the timing belt cover bolts are in place and tight. Those make a terrible noise.

+1 - I had much the same problem before my major last year and in fact it was not only a loose
timing belt cover bolt, but several other fasteners that were loose that once tightened solved the
noise-at-4000 problem in my 328. Just spend an hour looking for looseness and that might be all
    it is. Worked for me.

To follow up on this, turned out to be loose bolts on the ac belt cover in the right front engine bay

Another one that isn't as common but I have seen it twice is the same pipe that goes to the t-stat housing. Sometimes it can rub on the alternator. Sometimes when the lower hose is replaced it is too short or the pipe is pushed in to far and I have seen the pipe hit the alternator. Worth checking.

I had the exact same issue. Mine turned out to be a broken bolt, but it made a horrendous noise at ~4000RPM, and only over about 500-800 PMD range. I thought something was coming apart!

It's also common for that pipe to rub up against the fuel tank, wearing down the pipe and eventually putting a hole in the pipe. Had to have the worn spot on my pipe built back up with some welding beads. I now have a section of old rubber hose clamped over the area to prevent any chafing/wearing.
