    I finally felt like the 3D printers have gotten far enough along that I want to jump in so I just ordered a newly released model. Of the many things I want to print for myself I was wondering if there are any unavailable or stupidly priced plastic parts (or parts that could be plastic) that it would be nice to print up? I wouldn't mind zipping these off.

    Caveat is;

    It may be a while before I get up to speed on making models for parts, if someone has the skills already they can gin up the models and I can print them.

    Any ideas?

    Congrads. Which one did you get? I mean, size does matter, right :) ?
    I did some research and to be able to print foot and a half across or about I had to get the $200k printer. The 2-10k printer print small stuff

    Most definetly the plastic surround that house the window switches on the door....that would be amazing!

    3D printing is gonna be a win for the common man. A small simple inexpensive part like this can become essential and they know they have us by the ballzz so they can charge us insane prices and shamelessly take advantage of us on these plastic bits.

    With 3D printing, we'll be able to give them the big FU and create the parts ourselves....

    Does 3D printing produce good solid useable parts? I guess I always thought it was just a way to produce prototypes.

    Check out the thread in the Silver section regarding the first gun to be made with a 3-D printer. It actually fired a round.

    I have some small bits I have made .stl models of and was thinking of getting one of the new Makerbot units to print them up. What printer did you order, and what resolution does it produce?

    Robbie, not saying they aren't available. Just saying it's a part that is prone to breaking easily and Ferrari will charge insane prices for it. With 3D printing, we won't be at their mercy anymore because we will have other options.

    I would assume a 3D printer would be amazing for a business like yours. You could make the parts from scratch and give them the SNM finish. Wouldn't that be great?

    I hope I catch them all here;

    I got a MendelMax 2.0 with 3 an 1.75mm hotends.

    Resolution varies with speed, if you search Mendelmax 2.0 you can see the stats.

    As far as prototype or usable part, that depends on the application. What the machine does is create a PLA or ABS part. If your trying to make a plastic gear, bezel, clip, sprocket, panel, mount etc. that should be in plastic then you made a finished part. Unless you want to mass produce to the point that injection molding or other method is more economic then you made a prototype. If your making say an upper pillow ball mount to verify fitment on a car you are making a rapid an inexpensive prototype that must be made out of metal on a CNC machine later.

    @Daryl, If I get mine up and running before your ready to buy I would be happy to try and print your model to help you see if that bot or model or both are valid for the application.

    How about a drink holder insert for the ashtray area similar to what Carbonio makes for the 360/430/456/550/575... but not 355.

    I would buy one of those in a heart beat.

    Yep, and one of our CF gurus could use it as a mold to lay up with CF.

    @socal1, it uses sli3r and printrun which supports most of the leading formats.

    During the advance order peridod they are $1,500, not sure what they will be priced at later. That price also includes any altered parts post-beta. Interestingly enough some accessory and upgrade parts are already released and you print them out as your first pieces after verifying calibration, how cool is that!

    I also spent $50 on an LCD display that enables advanced diags and some stand alone features such as jogging motors manually, turning on fans, heaters etc.

    I spent about $150 on a supply of fillament that included several different colors.

    I have been chatting with some of the testers and the bot designer on their IRC forum (the unofficial one seems more busy) and have gotten really good support and direct answers for my newbie questions, I suggest going there for any questions you might have for them. Email support is also excellent, I got quick responses from that before I joined their IRC channel.

    I just paid 1300.00 for a part made on a 3D printer, this included the CAD. I wish I would have saw this thread first.

    But I'll need more. We are a Mfg.
