    The sleep paralysis story is pretty interesting but my experiences, like Jerry's, doesn't follow that line of thought.

    For me, the first incident was a day or two after a permanent change of station to Suwon AB, Korea. I remember waking up and seeing the image of an older, petit woman sitting at the end of the bed. Her head was turned towards me, though I could not see her face. She was wearing a long conservative dress with a high lacy collar. Yeah, it freaked me out initially but she didn't seem to pose as a threat so I fell back to sleep. Plus I was still out of whack from the time change.

    The next morning I told my girlfriend about the weird "dream" I had (she arrived in-country about a month before and was there with me).

    That night, while I was in a deep sleep my G/F wakes me up. Frantically, she says, "There she is! Do you see her? Do you feel her?!! She pulling!!! Do you feel it?!!!” Yes I did; something was tugging on the blankets from the foot of the bed. I vaulted out, turned on the lights but nothing was there. My G/F was totally freaked while I, in the meantime, searched the room for something logical, like rodents or who knows what. We found nothing.

    Yes, the factors applied to me as described by Wiki;
    "Some reports read that various factors increase the likelihood of both paralysis and hallucinations. These include:
    Sleeping in a supine position (facing upwards)
    Irregular sleeping schedules; naps, sleeping in, sleep deprivation
    Increased stress
    Sudden environmental/lifestyle changes
    A lucid dream that immediately precedes the episode. Also conscious induction of sleep paralysis is a common technique to enter a state of lucid dreams, also known as WILD."

    Paralysis aside, it's the experience on the second night that I'd like to know more about.

    ...and kids. I lived in Salem, Ma. for 20 years or so - a place where this kind of thing is reported all the time....here's one story, from a friend and neighbor, that never ceases to freak me out:

    A friend, my age, was constantly talking about her 'visitors' at night. They first started to appear when she was 4 or so and would 'arrive' at night, after her parents were sleeping and would wake her up to play. They were children - and their favorite thing to do with her was to play with her block set. Now and then, her parents would hear some commotion and their daughter talking out loud and would check in on her - they would enter her room to find all sorts of crazy block configurations, many times right up to or close to the ceiling. They were amazed and frightened by what they saw (never the kids) - they just didn't feel that she was capable of making such things by herself. Their daughters explanation was that she had help, and their entry into the room had scared them away. (her version was that they would rise up through the floor when they arrived, and would depart though the ceiling when they left). The peak was when she was 9 or 10, playing dolls in the middle of the night with the 'other girls' - there were more when she was this age, and they had names - odd ones that my friend wouldn't have known or made up on her own. She even reported that they would brush her hair (that one give me the heebie jeebies) The parents were perplexed, and a bit freaked, but chalked it up (and hoped it was) to an active imagination. Eventually, they stopped coming to visit, one by one. My friend was a bit depressed by this and missed them. They were always kind to her. After a couple of years passed, the story of these visits made it to another neighbor, an ex-sherrif (if you want to hear about how all Sherriff's in the area were cursed for ever during the Witchcraft Trials, search the internet - a freakish thing that has been borne out over time to be true, and turned our 'other neighbor' into a bona fide 'ghost hunter'). Lets call him Bob. Bob was amazed by this story and picked it up as a project. He did a little research at an old document archive facility in town and discovered that our neighborhood, despite what many people had lived there thought, had once been developed - in the early 1800's. All of us had thought it was just farmland up until the 50's and 60's when the farm was sold and houses put up, but in the early 1800's there was a large children's hospital and orphanage right on the exact site of my friends house. A little more research discovered that the hospital had burned down, taking the lives of many children. Bob discovered that the place had kept good records and found a roster from the year before the fire sent to the main hospital in the middle of town- a few of those odd names matched the ones that my friend had remembered playing with.

    Say what you want about ghosts and whether or not the exist - this is pretty freaky - and there are many others like this that I tell......

    anunakki - good luck. From the other stories I have heard, if 'it' hasn't tried to purposely scare you (to get you to leave), it probably wont.

    thats an interesting story. I know kids and animals can see these "spirits" even if they dont want to be seen, and anyone else can only see them if they want to be seen. I dont believe in ghosts like as in a dead person's spirit staying behind, but do believe in another group like humans who live along side us, and can shift shape and are much more powerful than us. If your interested in this kinda thing try looking up Jinn in Islam, some pretty facinating stuff.

    As far as sleep paralysis goes, I've had that happen to me quite a few times when I was younger. I would "wake" up in the middle of the night but I couldn't move or speak. I would just lay there looking at the ceiling freakin' out. I guess I was still asleep? There were also instances when I would see a figure on the foot of my bed. The more freaked out I am, the harder it would be for me to snap out of it.

    Going back to the original poster... what part of L.A.?

    I too don't believe in ghosts or the paranormal but I remember hearing a story about a friend of mine and his brother who started experiencing weird things in their house. It didn't happen until 4 years after they bought the house. It started with weird noises but then it got more physical. They would wake up in the morning with broken vases and picture frames. I vividly remember the look of my friend's face when he was telling us the story about one incident when he felt like he was pushed into the bathroom. Thinking it was his brother, he was going to take a swing at (behind) him but there was no one there. They sold the house eventually and from what I hear, the current resident didn't have any of those experiences at all.
