    My goodness.....I am in agony.

I have gout in the joint in my big toe on the left foot. I was prescribed allopurinol and it has proved worthless. I have been dealing with this attack since last Sunday. I have cut out all meat and I don't drink. I am eating Advil like candy. I have iced it, heated it, massaged it, and ignored it. No success anywhere. It was beautiful weather yesterday and today, and I didn't get to play golf. That really ticks me off!!

Has anyone ever found anything that relieves the attack? I have these things about once a year. It doesn't seem to relate to anything I do. I can't wear a shoe, I can't walk across the floor, and I can't practice my putting!!

Any help warmly welcomed. Any advice duly followed. Desperation reaching explosive levels.

    Must.....stop....the....pain......arrrrrrgh.

That sucks, I think the cure is mostly diet related. Do you smoke ? That might make it worse

Google it and you'll be able to get a consensus of what works and doesn't.

How was the diagnosis made? Pseudo-gout (a real entity) does not respond to gout remedies.

    Ditto.

Also, familiarize yourself with Purines, and limit your intake of purine rich foods while you work on figuring things out.

I had it in my right toe. While not as bad as yours, I can relate. Since I moved into an apartment and can't grill steaks all the time, mine seems to have went away. I have not had any problems in the past year. I would change your diet and give it some time.

I had it a few years ago. Went away in about a week. However, I remember from the research I did at the time that it's likely to get more severe with each new onset. Sorry! (Fortunately, I haven't had it since.)

allopurinol is to hopefully prevent flare-ups.
colchicine is to treat the acute episodes. your doctor should have prescribed some for you to have on hand just in case.
there is a med that combines the two.

drink lots of water for now. it can dilute and eliminate some the crystals out of your body.

The doctor did a blood test last Monday. He said my uric acid levels were too high again.

I got colchicine several years ago and man was I sick. The doctor didn't recomend anything beside Advil this time. My experience has been that the Advil helps to the degree that I have stopped weeping, but not to the point that I can walk. LOL!!!

I have spent the past hour looking around on google for help and it appears I am just going to have to tough it out a few more days.

The irritating part is that I get to have a root canal on Tuesday morning so I am in fine spirits.

    shoot me........just shoot me.........

Good thing to try anytime you get some good painkillers is to ask for a prescription for Phenergan, a damn good anti-emetic. I have issues with kidney stones and couldn't take Percacet or Vicodin without yacking all night, so my doc finally set me straight with Phenergan. One of those and some narcotic painkillers and you can nose dive off your roof without feeling it.

Water, water, water. Drink lots of it so your body can flush out the extra protein. I have either gout or pseudo-gout (never went to the pain of having my big toe stuck when it's really damn sore already), and I notice it kicks in when I'm not properly hydrating.

EDIT: Also, make sure you drink lots of water when you're not having problems. It can help ward off an attack.

Well. the pain is beginning to ease.......

I broke down and went back to the doctor as I could no longer stand not being able to sleep or walk. I was desperate. My health insurance be damned.....I had to get relief.

He prescribed me colchicine again, even though last time I tried it I was nauseus. (I didn't care this time, puking is a welcome holiday) and indomethacin.

Plus, I am sitting home today after my extremely enjoyable root canal this morning. Everyone I talked with said a root canal is no big deal.......they LIE!

So, my foot continues to improve.....I see a 100% chance of golf this weekend, and I am plotting my retribution against those that assured me my root canal would be a breeze.

    They will all pay.......BWAHAHHAHAHHAHAHAHAHA!!!

Why would you think being distilled would make any difference in gout?

Did it take your mind off the gout? ;) Some root-canals are near painless, others are nightmares...I've had 4-5 of them, the pain-scale is all over the place depending on lots of factors.

Glad to hear you are feeling better, I hope I only have to imagine what the pain is like.

Advise: DIET, it's much attributed to what you eat. I have a bit of psoriasis and it goes nuts when I'm on sugar & carbs....once I get back to healthy food & exercise, seems like everything works better!!!!! You also can't go wrong with some simple supplements: multi-vitamin, garlic, milk thistle (great for liver & cleansing!!!), etc. As soon as you're healthy, exercise....it's a pain, but the rewards are significant. Beyond that, listen to Uro...he is the MAN!

As a general comment, I would say gout is a BIG deal.

Gout is painful, but thats not the problem.

    2 issues:

They say (I haven't seen it) gout can destroy joints if left untreated for long periods.

More importantly, it is often associated with uric acid kidney stones which can be bears to take care of because they do not show up easily on x-ray and they are difficult to destroy with lithotripsy. They have a huge probability of coming back.

    So...

Take your meds as the doc prescribes!
