I am kicking around the idea of getting an 'Associates Degree in Criminal Justice' so I can expand my law enforcement horizons but researching government grants is just insane and very confusing as well as very frustrating. Can anyone with experience or advice in this procedure help me?

    Thanks in advance.

I have 10 applications out and cannot for the life of me get a return call or an interview. This idea came from a family member so I thought I would look into it and ask for advice.

    Thanks.

I'd say talk to the institutions you're considering. They not only know the federal and state regs, but how they themselves redistribute these funds, donations, scholarships, etc.

You are spot on with this as I spoke with a school rep earlier today and her suggestion was that I make an appointment with a counselor because they can also assist me in this search.

    Thanks for your input.

Aren't you like 50 years old? I think age has alot to do with it, I started 15 years ago and went traditional route of working part time and loans. Most people I remember had pell grants so you may want to look into that. Not sure an associate will do much for you these days, get a 4 year because no sense in doing anything half way.

I will be 50 this coming July and basically I am just looking into it so I am not sure if I will pursue this path. I was just kicking the idea around yet it may not even be needed in regards to advancing within my next police department.

There are four levels for TX LEO's and they are Basic (which I have) and Intermediate, Advanced and Master's. I still have few more years (I believe the time frame is five years between levels without a college degree) of Basic law enforcement classes but I have already started taking Intermediate classes and will be taking another Intermediate class next month. I am trying to stay ahead of the game which will look great for me with my next department.

As far as working part time I agree but on that note I have 10 job applications out and 6 of them are not even in law enforcement yet I have not even received a call or email for even an interview and some of these applications are with company's I once worked for and our separation was on good terms.

    Thank you for your input/advice,
    Gregg

Aren't most retiring from LEO careers at or even before your current age? How old would you be at degree completion? Is basically entry level law enforcement realistic at your age?

Are you thinking Gov't job or private security?

Also, look at the cost of education (including lost income), and the amount of time it would take to recoup the loss. There comes an age at which education is no longer economically advantageous. Not saying you are there,... but for law enforcement you may be. (This does not account for satisfaction / happiness...).

As an aside,... do gov't education grants have an age limit? Not much economic value for the gov't subsidizing an accounting degree for a 70 y/o!

Some of them are but they have completed their 25yr's of service because they entered the field very early in life. I did not and I was 45 when I started and finished the academy. I was one of the highest academic and physical ranking cadets of my class that consisted of cadets who were 20+yr's my junior, it is never too late to start a new career if your heart is in it.

As I have mentioned on numerous occasions I already hold a "Basic Police Officers" certification/license and I am a former Deputy Sheriff.

Believe me when I say I have already considered these aspects. On another note a gentleman 3-5yr's ago at the age of almost 55 became a Deputy Sheriff/Jailer with the Harris County Sheriffs Dept.

I am not sure about this specific criteria thus this is the reasoning behind the topic.

I think there is an age limit thats why I was asking, I have an aunt that graduated at 55 from Sam Houston with a teaching degree then became a teacher then professor. At 50 I would just take basics at community college and see where it leads, good luck.

Not impossible but remarkably more difficult for most people these days. It is cliche but the poor (and middle class) are getting poorer. The cost of everything except perhaps personal electronic devices and a few food staples is going up. Education costs are at least double what they were 20 years ago while wages have only gone up slightly, and at best flat in real dollar terms over the same timeframe.

Don't really want to turn it to P&R, as it has been going on for many years, but the chances of someone working an average hourly job (say $15/hr), running a meager household, and having enough left over to fund and education is greatly reduced. My guess is basically every family making less than $40k household income is living hand-to-mouth these days.

I didn't mean age limit on county jobs, that kinda goes without saying. That would be age discrimination, I meant age limits on grants which I believe you were asking to get advice on in first post. An education will definitely help you out in seeing things from a different perspective. I've reread our posts and can't figure out for life of me how you took my words about education grants and focused them on county jobs which is way out in left field. Did anyone else feel that I was trying to say age limits on county jobs and not grants ?
