Arden International's Nicolas Lapierre leads the GP2 series championship table today, having scooped the first points of the inaugural season with a sensational pole position. The Frenchman put a miserable morning, in which he completed just two laps of practice, well behind him in posting the fastest time of the day, for which he will be rewarded with two valuable points. He was followed by Giorgio Pantano (Super Nova International) and Jose Maria Lopez (DAMS.)

The top three drivers were separated by less that 0.1 seconds when the chequered flag fell on the thirty-minute session. Indeed, the top nine drivers were covered by just 0.7 seconds!

Everyone now is looking forward to the first GP2 series race tomorrow afternoon. With times as close as these, its sure to be a nail-biter!

Arden and Supernova both make their presence known. Speed picks up 6th and beats his teammate by over 2 seconds! This is at Imola, if you don't know.

PS: Note the sons of Piquet, Rosberg and Lauda in the field. Note how none of them set the pace on fire. :)

Lauda got too many genes from his mother.

I'm surprised at how well Swiss hopeful Jani did. Right behind Rosberg.

    Go Speed-racer, go!
