Gee, not more reactions from anybody?

This is the biggest news for F1 in years. GPMA could have torn F1 apart (think Champ Cars and IRL or boxing) and now it is dead and defunct. End, zero, kaputt, no more discussions.

This is a GIGANTIC win for Max and Bernie and will assure the future of the sport for years to come. Not that I doubted GPMA was just smoke 'n' mirror, but it is reassuring to see them gone for good (even though they officially continue to exist, them signing the 2008 sheet is an official peace treaty).

Nobody's posting because it was a foregone conclusion. I don't know any local F1 fan who actually believed that it would go forward after Ferrari signed the 08 extension. Where Ferrari goes, that series is Formula 1

I'm glad you guys are all so clear voyant. If you look back on when we discussed this topic the last time, the GPMA still had quite a few ardent supporters amongst the FChat group.

As I said, I never thought that GPMA would win, but I did always fear that it could come to a separation with Ferrari in one league and a bunch of other teams in the other. CART was stupid enough to go that route. It could have happened to F1. Especially since it happened before in F1 in the eighties (e.g. the famous race Pironi "stole" from Villeneuve in 82).

the way i looked at it was like this, we have f1 and GPMA... then more job opportunities on each camp... of course both series will become complete crap just like IRL and cart....... but there is always Rally....

While I expected they wouldn't break away, it's nice to hear this news. All bark and no bite. Does anyone know why they decided to sign with Bernie or was it all BS the whole time.

First of all Bernie has nothing to do with the FIA. He represents FOM. The FIA sets the rules. FOM controls the money. Two separate and distinct entities. The only thing the GPMA teams did was to submit entry to continue in the FIA F1 World Championship. Basically ensuring they won't be boxed out of F1 in 2008 by the coming March 31 deadline that Max stronghandedly imposed. Got it ?

There's still a rift with Bernie about the income F1 generates and how that money is controlled and what portion the teams get. Has anyone read anywhere where the GPMA is dead and gone ? It's not dead and not gone but hopefully these entry submitals will help band together all the teams to apply more leverage against FOM so that they can work an arrangement where they are getting a more fair share of the money pie. And to which they justly deserve IMO.

The GPMA has never been against the FIA although the new homologus rules proposals might make car manufacturers think twice about being in F1 if they can't show case their technology. GPMA's biggest beef has always been with Bernie about the money. IMO Bernie will have to relent now that all the teams are onboard.

Personally I feel that the new rules including 5 year engine developement freeze, common ECU's, etc. is going against what F1 fans want to see. F1 will become another Indy/IRL type series and it will lose fans and manufacturers that don't want to see that type of racing. Sure there will be more privateer teams but isn't Indy/IRL mostly (or all)privateer ? Part of F1 that's exciting to me is to see what teams come out of the box strong and what teams can develop and catch the early strong runners.

BTW remember last year the FIA had an online survey of what the fans wanted to see in F1 ? Well the new rules proposals certainly fly in the face of what the fans said they want to see. So why watch a series when the governing body asks it's fan base what it wants then creates rules that are basically the exact opposite of what they want ? If these rules do get ratified which I'm sure they will, I for one, will no longer have an interest in the sport and I'm sure I'm not alone. The FIA is way too meddlesome for their own good and it has hurt the sport. They want to curb speed for safety...well when was the last serious injury in F1 ? Senna and how long ago was that ? Indy had a death this weekend. Maybe they should curb their speeds? They want to save development costs...kind of tough when the rules change on a yearly basis. I, for one, would love to see an F1 type series without the FIA's dictatorship whose ever failing and changing rules never accomplish what they set out to do.

Bernie has a LOT do with the FIA. Not officially as you stated, but being buddy with Mad Max is all that matters in this business.

True GPMA is not dead and gone, but by signing the 2008 lineup, they basically surrendered. And I'm glad they did. GPMA was a bad idea from the start. Manufacturers are too self centered to ever agree on anything and run a series like this.

Interesting how we FChatters differ on opinion: I thought this news rocked the F1 world (and was the best news in a long time), others thought this is no news at all but a foregone conclusion and Prova85 sees it different altogether. So who said this is a clear cut case? :)

Now this rumour if true and probably is IMO, means finally the end of the GPMA threat. I think that the fact that the CVC will replace Bernie as the major shareholder has given the teams confidence that a more equitable piece of the F1 money pie will be coming their way. I like Bernie's quote about how Ron wants equality for all but with just a bit more for himself. That wanker. :)

I don't know who controls CVC, but it wouldn't surprise me if a certain Slavica is a major share holder. :)

Surely you jest... But Bernie is certainly no fool. Is she linked to CVC in some way ? Wouldn't put it past him to have rigged it that way. LOL !
