My 18th bday is coming up and mum is bugging me about what i want. I really (and i'm not trying to brag or anything here) have everything i want. She mentioned however, a gps unit. Does anyone have one of these? Our jeep has a built in one and its great. The thing is, they are really expensive but are they worth it? I was thinking about the Magellan 700:

I decided to get a pda, software and a bluetooth gps reciever. The pda comes in handy once in a while too. For some reason I just don't like those standalone gps systems. They seem overpriced to me for what they do. Good luck in your search though.

I have a Garmin iQue 3600. It's a PDA/GPS/too much other stuff for me to figure it all out.

The GPS system seems to work pretty well. It could use more volume for the voice commands when driving but it seems to do pretty good once you get the route programmed in.

I havent even scratched the surface of the rest of the things it will do.

    Check it out here...http://www.buy.com/retail/searchresults.asp?querytype=home&qu=garmin+iQue+3600&qxt=home&dclksa=1

Edit: and it does have a trip tracker that will tell you how fast your currently going as well as max speed, driving time, total time...etc. etc......

I have a Garmin Street Pilot III which is pretty nice. It matters what you want to do with it. The SPIII gives you road and attractions information, not LAT/LONG and elevation. It does give you speed, routes, max speed, and trip data. I will use it in the Ferrari on the highway to check speed.

However, it is best for when you are driving in new territory. I bought it to drive across the country, however, it is limited in Alaska. Few roads, and I know my way around the city. Best for navigating long trips on roads, not off-road adventures, because once you leave a known road, it does not provide any info.

But, the program on the computer is nice to find things in the lower 48 out of curiosity. I can type in addresses and make points, see distances, and roads. A complete atlas. Even in Alaska, I can put in an address and see it on a map. Helps a little when finding restaraunts or stores on back roads. I was getting my emmissions test, and it showed the name of the business that I was at.

If this interests you, you would want the Duluxe version with mount and complete software. I bought an extra mount and cigarette lighter power cord, so I can transfer it between vehicles. Best price is from WalMart online.
