I just found this out and was curious if anything can be done. A long time friend of mine graduated from college in May. Or so she thought. She was approved by her counselor/advisor, went through all the hurdles that require you to be approved to walk, had/has her cap and gown, and WALKED ACROSS THE STAGE shaking hands with the President (or whomever does that at the school she attended).

A month or so goes by and she still had not received her diploma in the mail. She calls to find out where it is. It's at that moment she's told that after an audit was done (post graduation mind you) that she was a certain number of hours short and would need to re-register for classes. It was apparently a computer glitch that didn't catch it. *rolling eyes* They never even bothered to call or send a letter regarding this either.

From what I understand is that these are not even classes pertaining to her major. Not only will they not assist her in anyway, but they've already denied her first appeal. She has 2 more I believe, the second one in action now.

Can anything be done legally. Why should she not only be penalized for their mistake, but also have to pay to take these classes? How many other people

I feel really bad for her and I'm just trying to look for any possible answers I can find.

Unfortunately it's really up to her to make sure she had all the classes required for graduation.

    ^ too true.

My advisor was usually MIA when it came to doing the advising. Other advising got me off track and I ended up sticking around for another semester to finish up the 6 hours that I needed to graduate (with another 6 of misc classes and others I audited). After *****ing up a storm, it was on their dime, not mine.

Ouch, sounds like a painful situation.

I dont think bringing up money will get her far as they will simply reply with "She would have had to take those classes anyway".

I had a friend with a similar story, but she found out a month before the ceremony that she was 2 classes short. When she applied to graduate, she was cleared and the counsellor had confirmed that she had all the necessary requirements.
Essentially, she appealed and appealed, but unfortunately she was denied over and over.

Hope it works out differently for your friend. It might be too late for her to register for classes now as well!

That's the thing, she has the hours and classes documented on her own. The classes, the hours, whatever else was needed she has on record. Every class that's in the book she was expected to take she took. She worked so hard she was deadset on making sure everything was in place and double checked everything she had added up to what was required.

Skyler, yea she won't bring up the money situation in her appeal because that's not what pisses her off. It's the fact that she did everything that was required of her and it wasn't until after she had walked across stage that she was told she didn't really graduate. As well as not being notified about it. And I believe there are a good number of people who are dealing with the same issue because of "the computer glitch."

I'm just irriated for her and trying to seek any advice to help her if possible. It's looking as though she's just screwed. I know several other people who have had issues with this school saying one thing in the beginning and changing their minds later on.

Let me make sure that I'm following along here. As I understand it, your friend has written documentation (from the University) of all of the requirements necessary for her to complete her degree program. She has met all of those printed requirements and is now being told that there's more that she needs to do? I can't see that holding water.

When I was in college, the requirements for each degree were clearly spelled out in various places. Once you applied to a specific major and were accepted, the requirements for you to get that degree were locked in. Therefore, any changes that were made after the time that you were locked in would not impact your specific degree requirements.

Seems like something is missing here...
Does she have the classes documented as being done or not?

Most institutes of higher education have requirements that the last several classes be taken at that University so maybe she took some summer classes at a school near home and the school isn't counting that towards her graduation. This is the same reason that I didn't get Summa Cum Laude (or any honors stats for that matter) when I graduated from Wayne State University. I went to Wayne for my education through their Mortuary Science School, which happens to be a degree program at Wayne, after I had already received a Bachelor's Degree from a private school in Michigan. Wayne requires that the last 60 credit hours be taken at Wayne State. The Mortuary Science program consists of 54 hours for completion. I went to Albion, got my degree then transfered in to Wayne and finished the requirements for an additional Bachelor of Science degree but was denied any honors distinction (regardless of my 3.97 GPA at Wayne) because of the fact that I did not take the last 60 hours of course work at Wayne...probably should have taken a golf and a tennis class and got my cords. *Shrug*

I appealed it all the way to the Dean's office as I took all the classes that I needed at the Mortuary School but because of the way that the curriculum was set it is impossible to get honors status by attending just their professional school. Needless to say I was denied so I had them mail me my diploma and I didn't walk for the second time. Gets to feel like you are fighting city hall and IMO it isn't worth all the effort...tell your friend to take the classes and get her sheepskin, she's at the mercy of the University and they make up the rules as they go.

This happened to me too...word for word. I found out after graduation a class I took really counted for nothing when it was approved for some odd credit. I almost was barred from entering law school because this was caught so late. I had to take one class online and got the diploma in August. My advisor admitted to making the mistake, but it didn't matter. I still had to take a 100 level elective to finish my degree. I was never so mad as when I talked to the woman on the phone and she told me what happened. This was probably the most frustrating thing that I have ever dealt with.

If she can't verify that she completed the necessary requirements then just make it up and move on. It doesn't sound like the institution will budge unless she personally knows the dean or Daddy is some huge benefactor. ;) Which, I'm sure isn't the case or we wouldn't be having this discussion.

From what I know, she can verify everything so she has that on her side. But she'll decide what to do after her appeals are all final.

I believe she's already registered (or will be doing so) for classes for next semester just in case.

Yea, she doesn't know anyone there. I tried to see if my uncle or a family friend knew anyone to pull strings, but they aren't "top" contributing alumni.
