idk what format you watched it in, but i bought the HD-DVD a few months ago and the sound was incredible! Not to mention they did a good job with the picture.

They used a bunch of older cars and F2 cars and made them to look like the cars from the 66 season. When Speed TV broadcasted the movie, they added an interview with Frankenheimer and Gartner in which they talk about the details. I would assume the DVD has that (or similar) interviews as add-ons?

Anyway, a lot of the shots of the races are real footage from 66, particularly the aerial shots. The movie crew got e.g. a 15 minute track time at Monaco to shoot their sequences which then were interspersed into the real footage.

Visually the movie is a masterpiece, but as an entertainment movie it falls flat. The story is as bad as some of the acting. I think it is only us petrolheads who still get a kick out of it.
