When I'm filling up with gas I usually take the time to walk around the car, look underneath, check the tires, check the fluids etc... Tonight I noticed the engine screen was hanging down in front. When home and jacked up determined the 5 mm allen bolt had broken through the thin mesh screen. Still attached in back, but both front bolts had gone through. My guess is the last wrench over tightened the bolts and that weakened the thin mesh enough where a little normal movement broke it off. The bolts still had the broken off mesh on them when unscrewed. I added a washer on each before replacing. Pics below before and after.

Another note when car was in air I noticed almost all of the 3-4 wire plastic clamps were unattached. Most of them run along the right side of the car.

This happened to the plastic under panel on all 3 of my 550's. Maybe they just can't get it right no matter what material they use?

I think they just need to use a washer, I actually need a bigger one, but this will work for awhile. In theory the design will work, but every 18 yo mechanic around the world makes the mistake of over torquing and in this case it pinches the light mesh so it breaks with just minor stress.

Same problem with my 02 Spyder and 06 Coupe. Both were hanging within a few k miles of driving. I just pulled them off... I still have them somewhere in the garage.

I don't know how the streets are in Oklahoma or Texes, but here in Los Angeles we have plastic bags
    to contend with.

The guys that installed my cat bypass (that was a brief one month experiment) left the screen off
as it wouldnt fit right with the new pipes. A few days later I'm driving along and see a black plastic bag
gracefully dancing in the wind 50 yards or so in front of me.

I must have changed lanes 4 times to avoid this thing but no way, It was like a magnet. It stuck right
onto the bypass pipes and stunk for a good two weeks. Even after I removed the bypass pipes, I had
a hell of a time removing the melted plastic.
