I pulled the bolts that hold the wheel hub to the a-arm through the bushings on early 246 and they were covered with grease. I know I am supposed to put grease on the dust caps on the ends of the bolts, but am I supposed to grease the bolts where they go through the bushings?

Maybe someone trying to do some rust-prevention? However, depending on the type of A-Arm bushing used there could be some lubricant present (but usually not on the bolt). For the stock type, that flexes a rubber component to provide the motion, no, it wouldn't be lubricated. But for an aftermarket Polyurethane bushing, that rotates to provide the motion, yes, it typically would be lubricated on the sliding surfaces to minimize any "squeaking". Do you have the stock type A-Arm bushings or aftermarket solid Polyurethane A-Arm bushings?

I would apply a small amount of grease or anti seize to all hardware that is seldom disassembled or prone to corrosion. It's always amusing to watch someone cursing a frozen corroded bolt and then reinstall said bolt bone dry.....think of the "next guy"

Thank you for your replies. I can’t see how a little grease will hurt anything. The bushings are original style rubber

Actually there is a problem with grease there. Don't do it clean it off. All the suspension bolts have torque spec and that spec is dry. If you lube you have the wrong torque and can damage bolt from over torque. Suspension are not torque to yield so they can be reused. Nuts should be new because they are lock nuts. Lock nuts no grease either or helps defeate the lock. Suspension hardware is special as in hardened. It does not corrode over the service life. A corroded suspensipn bolt you replace vs. Prevent the corrosion.

Thanks for the heads up on that. Does anyone know the specs on those nuts, or where to get them? Are they special or NAPA?

Look at the head of the bolt. Usually suspension is metric 10.9 class. So you match a 10.9 nut with 10.9 bolt. There is counterfeit hardware that does not meet specs and could be dangerous so buy from known quality supplier like "Aircraft Spruce and Specialty". When in doubt buy critical fasteners from Ferrari, or Ricambi America. Image Unavailable, Please Login
